OK, my planned trip to LA didn't happen becouse the powers that be didn't like the idea of the school photographer attending a school trip with the 6th form and paying for the trip himself. As i still want a photographic holiday I plan to visit Cornwall during the May school holidays but would appreciate any help/advice from those who have been (apologies if this is the wrong forum, let me know where it should go)

I have visited Perranporth for a day trip (only 2 hours flight time from Blackbushe) and love the coastal views (those interested here is a link to my recent flight along the coast) so would like to spend more time taking photos along the coastline and at other sites and I would appreciate any advice on the following:

- suggestions on where to have a base, looking at self-catering ideally
- nice walks
- I plan to visit Tintagel, (always wanted to go there), Lands End and maybe Newquay Zoo... anywhere else of photographic interest?
- castles/waterfalls, etc
- nature reserves/boat trips for nature watching (dolphins, etc)
- places to visit enroute (driving from Farnham, Surrey)
- don't suggest any pubs, I don't drink !

Feel free to post any photos you've taken in the area so I can see what's out there. I plan to do a lot of research for locations, etc but I would really appreciate info from those who have actually been, especially with regard as to where to stay, I'm finding this a bit difficult to choose as there seems to be a lot out there !

Many thanks,

Ashley

I go to Newquay every year and from there I visit Padstow which has breath taking views, go past the Greens mini golf cafe and along the track to the war memorial, and you can look right out to sea.

If you like coach trips, the Beatles mystery tour bus.

I have been on this, and its very good. They take you to places the tourists don't normally see.

Newquay zoo is good, for ticket discounts go to the Tourist centre where you can get offers not normally offered by the zoo. I don't know if it will be running yet, but a land train takes you to the zoo and back.

Watergate bay and Fistral are good, but wrap up warm as it can be very windy. Also Newquay war memorial is good to take pictures of.

I also like St Ives, if you are not driving, then the Grayhound buses have a very good service http://www.westerngreyhound.com/

Hope this helps, looking forward to going again. Cant wait.

The Minack Theatre, not far from Mousehole. Amazing outdoor theatre overlooking the sea :)

Since you already plan on a visit to Tintagel, I would suggest a trip a few miles Eastwards to Boscastle, with a stop at St Nectan's Glen and waterfall about 1/2 way between (carpark on the left side of the road while travelling towards Boscastle then about a mile of lovely shadowy valley beside the stream) the 2 villages.

Boscastle is worth a visit of its own and the Cobweb (yes, it's a pub but you don't have to drink with the meal!) does good food at reasonable prices. The NT café does a decent cup of coffee.

Head West from Tintagel and seek out Trebarwith Strand, a tiny inlet sometimes populated by surfers. Pretty little stream babbling through a rocky cleft and (at the right state of tide!), a decent size sandy beach. Another pub - again for food (even non drinkers have to eat!), the Port William overlooking the beach on the cliffside to the West.

Head South and there's the Eden project. Well worth a visit at any time of year. Plenty to see and do - take the time and expend the effort to climb the metal stairs to the high viewing platform. I don't like heights but was fine on the stairs and platform on our recent visit. Make sure you warm your gear before entering the tropical biome to avoid steaming up.

Haven't "done" the Land's End trip for a while - vastly over-rated IMO - the Lizard is far prettier and less over Emmety! Gweek (at the North end of the Lizard peninsulla) is another pretty village and houses the seal sanctuary (they get returnees in the river too).

TBH, you could spend a couple of months down there and not do it all, so either have a look at the conty's tourist information site or stop at a brown sign place and pick up a handful of brochures from the rack!

There's a campsite in Tintagel where you can rent a static caravan. Plenty of B&Bs around and many pubs (yes, I know!) do B&B too. Again, a visit to the TI site should throw up some options.

Happy Hunting!

yes, it's a pub but you don't have to drink with the meal!

if you go all the way to cornwall and don't drink the skinners and st austell ales then you are doing yourself a diservice.

The port william at trebawarth is the perfect place to sup an ale whilst looking over the cliff :clap::clap:

It's an even better place to spend a couple of nights and use as a base for exploration!

The Minnack theatre is also great to shoot from the water if you can. I have no idea if you can get a boat out there from Penzance at this time of year, or of course how wild the ride would be, but it's well worth it.

Also worth trying to catch some good evening light around the old mines in the St Agnes area. Some cracking shots to be had if you catch the right conditions.

Pah - Doom Bar brewed at Rock, the other side of the Estuary to Padstow. You can catch a passenger ferry across or drive around (bit longer though). Nice huge beach of sand with few people on it off season

The other bit people always for get is around Looe. We stayed there for a week and it's a really nice piece of cornwall with some stunning views. Polpero, the ferry at Fiwey.

Another hidden beach is at Crantock, near Newquay. National trust parking - huge expanse of sand, sand dunes, river running into the sea.

Then Hollywell bay leisure park is nearby - just for the Battle Boats (two people in a enclosed boar firing balls at other boats, plus guns outside for others to shoot at the boats, or mines releasing huge explosions of water - great fun.

The Fort/castle at Falmouth is good, Bodmin Jail is brilliant on a wet rainy day and fantastic food also.

There's a really good seal santuary and rescue place near Helston, which also has Flambards? big entertainment park, rides, static old aeroplanes, the blitz experience.

Then St Michaels mount obviously - watch the tide times if you want to cross/see the causeway.

Basicly if you follow the coast roads all around cornwall you won't be disappointed anywhere.
