Hello - has anyone ever visited Albania and have any tips in regards to solo (female) travel, or guides etc you can recommend?

My last few holidays have been to Iceland, just for a few days but by myself, which I was totally fine with as i am familiar with the country etc. I had plans penciled in to go to Albania with one of my friends after watching a documentary about it featuring one of our favourite actresses (Eliza Dushku) - i thought she had agreed we would go but now can longer commit to it after it going on for a while and now i really have my heart set on going. I am fine with doing things by myself, but really felt like this was a trip i'd want to do with someone, especially in a new country and by myself.

i was given a recommendation of a local guide who i have been in touch with on facebook but i dont think its a full guided thing so i dont think it will be suitable. being on an organised tour has never been my preference as you're so tied down on schedule etc - but maybe thats the only way I will get to go.

I just wondered if anyone else had experience of the country? I don't really want to go another year without going on holiday (1st world problems) but Iceland is just too expensive for me now to go solo and do what i'd like to do (west fjords) and I have some air miles which would get me a flight to Albania.

Would probably have been looking at May/June or September as i think its nice but not hot and out of autumn/spring.

quick google suggests it is a very safe and welcoming country as long as normal precautions are taken.
says driving is pretty bad though.

Yeah i have done lots of googling, (trust me :-) ) but always keen to get as much input as possible. only done solo travel in Iceland and had no reservations about being a lone woman, but this is a whole unknown kettle of fish.
