My distance vision is not too bad at 6/9, I do however use off the shelf reading glasses for anything less than 1 Metre. So how is it that l can see the info in the camera viewfinder perfectly well without my glasses when it's only a couple of inches from my eyes yet can't see it at all with my glasses on?

The diiopter adjustment is probably compensating for your blindness.

The viewfinder simulates a viewing distance of around 1 yard/metre. The dioptre just brings the screen into sharp focus.
