We have a broadband, Tv (not everything but includes sports) and phone contract with VM which is soon coming up for renewal. In the past, on several occasions, I have eventually threatened to leave and then get through to retentions who end up giving a very similar deal to the existing one. Has anyone gone through this experience recently, as I gather from somewhere, that they are cutting back on such deals.

Our contract has expired so we are on a 30 day rolling contract which has gone up £3.50 pm ( usual price rise) from £65,compared with what other suppliers are charging for less service I am not complaining.
However we are in the process of city fibre laying a separate cable so it will be interesting to see what happens then.

If my contract reverts to normal rates, VM say my monthly rate will increase from £89 to £132 so quite substantial. We have had CityFibre installed recently in our road so I will investigate but not sure where they are on tv.

No experience with VM but some with Sky as a customer (and a few years back in sales).

They often limit the amount of deals to give out to teams. So they may give a team say 10 of deal A, 20 of deal B and 50 if Deal C, for a period, so can be luck as tp what is available at the time.

As a customer with Sky, you sometimes have to bide your time. Last time I had to cancel and had about a week to go of my 30 days when I contacted them again to give them a last chance to give me the deal. wanted and they did. In some cases people have actually ended the 30 days, left Sky and then Sky put a retention call after that.

See what a similar package would be for Sky and BT, and you can then use that as a reason to leave.

Yes I'll be looking at that soon. Paying 77 quid for their top package which at full price is 130ish. I'd imagined that they would cut me a deal for another 18 month sign up.

If not, sky are getting increasingly desperate for my business. Last offer was 21 including Netflix so even with virgin fibre it would be cheaper.

It seems companies are trying to push back on deals.

We have 4 accounts with EE and we've been with them for around 5 or 6 years, every 12 months I always call them up as the contracts are expiring (SIM only) and they do a good deal and we renew.
This time the deal they were offering wasn't great, so I shopped around. Found I could get 30GB data for £8 month with 3.

So I rang EE back and requested a PAC code for all 4 lines, an hour later the retentions department rang me, asked what deal I found so I told them, he said "we can't do that but we can do 30GB for £12 a month". He sounded surprised when I challenged why I would spend an extra £16 per month for the exact same service, so I do what we should all do and I voted with my feet.

I'd like to say I'd do the same with Sky but I hate Virgin's TV so I'll probably bluff Sky and take the best deal I can. :)

For info.
You don’t need to call to get a PAC.
Just text PAC to 65075.

I call every year 30 days before the end of the current contract to see what they can offer. Sometimes they match the current deal other times they do not. If they offer something you don't want call back another day.

I don't have any other decent BB on our road so have stuck with VM for last few years.

I am on 350mbps BB and weekend only calls, paying £35pm which was going to go from 37.50 to 47 for 200mbps BB and weekend calls if I did not renegotiate last month.

Funnily enough, 10 minutes ago I had EE call me back again, someone else from the Loyalty team.
Clearly the PAC requests have gone through.

They've offered me a better deal, only £2 a month more expensive, but given 5G and free EU roaming on all 4 accounts, my wife and 2 boys get 3GB per month, I get 160GB and can have an additional 100GB a month to gift between them.

Always be prepared to not accept a deal if you're not happy, walk away and most times they'll do what they can to retain your business. At the end of the day EE are now getting £34 a month from me instead of nothing.

I generally try to challenge everything but VM are reeaaly hard to get much of a deal out of.
I only have 200mb BB and i have to say its epic , fast as fuk and 100% reliable for £38/month no deals to be had

I ended up agreeing a £3 pm increase which I was pleased with given the annual inflation should have been £8. Seems that deals are still available.

On the phone to Virgin right now.....

Old package was £77.99 (black Friday deal)
New package is £95 - the only difference is we get Netflix included (saving £11 on my separate sub) and 6 months of Disney+ (so I can watch Pistol). Which is an effective increase of £6.01. Considering as the chap said "everything has gone up" I don't think that's too bad.

£97 a month with Virgin as out of contract but same package still £90+ Switched to Sky with HD basic package but still 300 plus telly stations and only £47 a month.
Sounds like a good deal. Does it mean no sport and films and a slower broadband speed?

Our area largely runs on the BT copper network and I think the lines have pretty much had it. Really unstable but because there's a connection and the old technology is getting phased out, nothing is being done. No idea when BT fibre lines are going in so it's hard to shop around for deals.

Giving some serious consideration to the Virgin lines that are also here. Is it difficult getting hold of their customer service line or can you generally get through to get stuff sorted quite easily (connection issues, renewals etc)?

Never had a problem getting through, the rare times that I’ve needed to call them.

Yep, never had films anyway as wife has netflix and has a prime amazon account, or sports as don't have any interest in sports. Speed wise we used to be on the virgin 200+ mb supposedly, now on a "slower" package but havent noticed it make a difference to what I need at all, still streaming with zero issues etc.

Literally just done a speed test and getting 67mb download and 18 upload.

Years ago we got sucked into the hype of faster speeds and how fantastic it is but actually its all just hype. Better to suss out what you need for you and save some money.

Took me over an hour to get through to virgin on the day I was cancelling

Did the “I’m cancelling unless you can come up with a better deal” with Sky today. I was expecting to go ahead with the cancellation but they actually knocked £26 off the threatened new monthly price for tv, broadband and landline, so I’m actually £2.50 a month better off now than previously. Only took 10 minutes to get through too.

Last week the guy on the helpline said there were no deals available; obviously I’m pleased to get a better deal but it does pee me off that you have to threaten to leave to get the better prices.

Out of curiosity, are VM terms that there will be yearly increases, on the basis of a more than 1 year contract, of 3.9%+CPI ?

This increase seems to be universal(?) across BT and other phone & BB ISP's

It's a matter of opinion if evf's are preferable to ovf's or not but a couple of things I'll now mention are not really opinions but are facts, although to give you some some wiggle room I'll say that these are facts IMO but in any case they may not matter to some people. They do matter to me so I apply significance to them :D

For example.

- evf's allow you to see detail in shadows and even in the dark which would be invisible with an unaided ovf or by eye.
- evf's allow you to see detail when using the magnified view that would be simply invisible with any unaided ovf system or by eye thus allowing you to focus very accurately, because you can see more detail and see what you're focusing on.

There are facts, advantages, disadvantages and about a ton of opinions on both sides so it's really up to each of us to make our own minds up but I do think that some of the criticisms of evf's and mirrorless are a little more hyperbole than grounded in objective comparison.

I didn’t realise but my last 18m VM contract was at a fixed price so no inflation increases, same applies to the new contract. Unfortunately this doesn’t apply to my phone contracts with ee. With hindsight, I should have bought the phones outright or used the Apple no interest scheme.
