Victoria Wood

Aww, that is sad news. I will admit that her humour had never really gelled on me as much as it should do but my sister and mother loved her and having said that, I do appreciate her contribution to TV comedy as it were.

:(

Well b****r :(
Really liked some of her conversational stuff, and songs.
Especially The Ballad of Barry & Freda.

"Even educated fleas do it!"

Loved her beautifully observed sitcoms as much as her stand up/sit down shows, if not more.

I never knew she was ill either :(

She was by far funnier and much more entertaining than the "modern day" comedians / comediennes.

RIP

Not quite the same song Nod. That's Ella Fitzgerald.

My favourite bits of that are...

No cautions,
Just contortions:
Smear an avocado on my lower portions!

...and

Be mighty,
Be flighty
Come and melt the buttons on my flame-proof nightie!

She played at school in the late '70s or early (very!) '80s and I'm sure she played an early version of it which did include the line from the earlier song.

Is her magician husband Geoffrey someone still going? Have a feeling not.

Yes, he is still alive. Geoffrey Durham, aka (previously) the Great Soprendo.

Crossed posting with Marc!

Geoffrey Durham (The Great Soprendo), still around I believe.

Yeah he's still around...though considerably slimmer than his former stage persona.
They divorced many years ago.

A great loss and suvh a talent.

Too young and as said above, bloody cancer.

I'm GUTTED. such a legend, basically grew up watching all her stuff. Used to read a script book every time i stayed over at my aunt and uncles as i slept next to a bookcase and it was always the most interesting thing to read! The b side for the 1991 comic relief single 'the smile song' is a lesser known, but spot on one of her songs (and better than 'the stonk' lol ) - so shocked - one of those comedians where characters and sketches are ingrained in your life and you quote/reference them without even realising it.

Crazy amount of icons passing away :-(

Another sad loss, she always made me laugh

As Cobra says, way funnier than some of today's 'comedians' sad to see her fall victim to that awful disease :(

I remember one of the lines from her songs, "Beat me on the bottom with your women's weekly", always made me chuckle and she had a great delivery.

Cheers.

That one was very popular it seems :-)

Another shocker my mated passed away from cancer this morning to ,20 years younger than me ,and I did his wedding pics in January .

Entirely possible that she performed the older version before rewriting the words for the '88 show.

Seems like someone up there is collecting comedians now that they have the rock band sorted.

Or people are simply dying, as people are prone to doing?

Will be partaking in some Acorn Antiques and As Seen on tv soon, glad the dvds are in the library - altho youtube was useful last night. 'Kitty' from as seen on tv, classic.
