Hi guys

New to the 52 this year but feeling very inspired by looking and reading at all your threads from last year and this year.

I wont be doing the themes that you guys are doing as we usually get set something similar at college. Also I really want to focus on my passion of documentary and photojournalism and think this thread would keep my ideas flowing.

I have a few projects set out for the next few months so will include them but will also include a few others.

Looking forward to posting my images as well as contributing to all your projects.:)

Vicky.

Ok first post.

#1 - Lost

This is an ongoing project about my hometown and the small town syndrome. This was one I took a couple of days ago of an old man struggling on the ice, sort of sad look about it. Deliberately de-saturated the colours to give the image a bit of a depressed look. Oh I started off happy didnt I! :D

#2 - Small Town

Taken on a long walk up a very steep hill. Sort of inspired to give the polaroid look.

Hi Vic,

This sounds like a great idea for a 52.
I love the idea of "small town" for the first project you're sharing here. There are quite a few small towns around where I live, so it's a theme that I can relate to and it seems like a good choice for developping your interest in documentary photography.

I love the idea behind the PP in the first shot. The subdued colours really do add to the atmosphere and the feel that you were going for.
If I'm honest though, I'm not sure that the blurring on the main figure really works for me. I think I would have preferred to either have the figure sharp and the background blurred; or to have the whole figure in frame to give some context to the slippery ice; or to have even more blur on the figure to give a more ghostly appearance . . . I think this third one would work best in terms of the title "lost" and the feel of this set, but perhaps the other two would work better in a documentary context

The second shot I absolutely love. The PP is spot on for that polaroid look you were going for. Nice line leading into the shot with the streetlights and it really does have that small town feel to it.

Hi Sarah and thanks for the reply (was a bit worried when this dropped of the first page!)

Glad you like the idea and thanks for the feedback. I agree with you about the first one, it doesnt really feel quite right to me either but it was a bit of a rushed snap! But thats one of the ideas of this thread is too practice and improve. Thanks for the ideas as well, I might try blurring the figure more :)

Thanks for the comments on the second one, I might try this look on a lot more of my photos.

You're right about working in a set. I think the more images in a documentary, the more you get a feel for the subject.

Looking forward to seeing what i can get posted for next week :D

Ok this isnt exactly week 2 yet but have just finished editing my first batch of photographs I took last month and thought I would add them to a long list of growing documentaries (I will finish one one day!) :D

This was on a documentary based on material possessions. I shot these three underwater as I wanted to isolate them from where they usually are in your household. Got some good feedback from college but they arent obviously underwater so next time I'll do some faster shutter speeds to try and get the underwater effect.

Comments welcome, havent had many since beginning! :'(

Is it me or are they leaning to the right a bit?

Yeah your probably right andrew! The 2nd and 3rd one were a nightmare to get still even after being weighted down in the water.:)

I really like the idea behind this project of moving the subjects to an environment where they don't belong. However, I'm struggling to understand your statement above - were these shots taken under water or not? I actually can't tell from my screen. Maybe it would help if you can provide links to larger versions of the images?

Look forward to following your posts though as photojournalism is something that I really admire and your theme of small towns sounds excellent!

Thanks Pradipta for the comments! Sorry I have worded a bit wrong, yes they were taken underwater but what I meant was it isnt immediately obvious that they were, i.e - no bubbles, ripples

 Vic.

(You might want to change the title of post #1 to say that week 2(ish) has been added ;) I hadn't realised that you'd updated it)

Another great idea from you
I love the idea of taking these things outside of their natural environment. The 3 work well together as a triptych, but if I had to pick one it would be the bracelet. I think that one's come out very well.

I see what you mean about it not being obvious that they're underwater though.
Next time try using some fizzy water, rather than tap water - you'll get a far better bubbly effect (and it's cheap. I think Morrisons only charge about 40p for a litre bottle of own brand soda water)

It looks like these were shot looking down from above, so another thought for next time. It might be interesting to use a clear glass / vase with the water in and experiment with shooting the objects side on through the glass - that way if they start floating about it will actually add to the underwater effect.

Thanks sarah, all your feedback has been great! I hadnt thought of fizzy water so I will try that, trying to get hold of a glass fish tank for a more underwater effect. Thanks for the advice, its very encouraging :)

The above wasnt really my week 2 as it was done a while ago but I think ill use this thread as a bit of a progress tracker. I havent had a lot of time to do any street photography or documentary stuff due to my fashion unit at college. So this image can be my week 2 :)

Week 2 - White

Hi Vic, the portrait is nice enough but unfortunately the reflections in the beads are just a little too distracting for me. I'm not sure what to suggest as an alternative as I'm no lighting expert. What was your set up?

I am a bad person!

Have been totally busy but here has been my last few weeks efforts! Please comment! :)

Week #3 – Fashion – Documentary Style

Taken for my fashion unit, not my thing but took the documentary approach rather than studio.

Week #4 – Neil

Personal project based on my Uncle Neil who passed away a year last Christmas. He was an artexer and due to years of working with this it caused a blockage in his lungs and he gradually began to deterioate. I visited his wife at their old house and found that although she has the place completely re-decorated in modern style she has left all the artex that my uncle did.
