I want to get a better monitor for my computer. Although the computer is a few years old it still handles the limited amount of PP that i do and so I do not want to replace it at the moment.

I plan to buy a Dell ultra sharp and have noticed that the better models do not have a VGA input. Is using a VGA to HDMI adapter feasible and does it impact on the quality of the image displayed.

It is feasible, but expensive as you have to go from analogue to digital.

Personally, I wouldn't drive a high res monitor with analogue outputs at all. You are likely to get moire and you may find the hardware you have won't drive the monitor at native resolution.

If you have a desktop, I'd consider buying an upgraded graphics card for £20-£30 which ahs digital outputs. Laptops (with analogue out) aren't possible to upgrade though...

You may also find the more expensive U series monitors have more choice of inputs (my U2410s have VGA for example). You may also find that if the monitor has DVI, you can feed it a VGA signal (DVI has an analogue backwards compatibility mode which is sometimes implemented).
 
An active VGA to HDMI converter costs about £20 whilst a passive lead costs about £3-10. It depends on the computer and monitor whether just a lead will work but an active adapter will work. They used to be expensive, maybe Andy has not looked recently, but seem to have drop considerably recently. As suggested a new graphics card would be the best option and give your computer a boost for the same sort of money but if you don't want to open it up or have a laptop then they are on ebay.

Not looked. They were >£50 last time I looked!!!

I thought that was likely the case :D I ended up replacing three monitors on a job a while ago because it was cheaper than buying three adapters (the computers were sealed, specs units)
 
I would very strongly suggest not to connect anything via 20+ year old analogue VGA output. Flickering of display, poor colour reproduction and poor support for higher resolutions will be only just a few of the many problems you may encounter.
