I have a Galaxy S8. I just bought a second hand pair of Sony WH-1000XM3. They sound amazing.

However, I can't get the controls on the right hand ear cup to work.

Any ideas? Or are they faulty?

Have you anything else you could try them with?
Do you know anyone else with the same phone?

Thanks. I've tried them with my (Garmin) watch and the sound works great but no controls. I've tried them with an elderly bluetooth dongle on a PC and can get them to pair but not connect. But I don't know if either of these support AVRPC (which after some digging is the protocol that makes the controls understood).

However, after a night on charge, I now can't power the headphones on ;( I'm sending them back.

I'm unfamiliar with the headphones, but I daresay the controls are proprietary to Sony and may only operate their own devices.

Ordinarily I'd agree you - but for once it seems Sony have followed a standard :)

Update: old headphones sent back to seller for a refund (BTW they were very nice about it - sent DPD to pick them up with no fuss). New pair arrived yesterday and touch controls work perfectly. Dire Straits sounds *amazing* on them :D

Excellent result - I'm glad it worked out for you. :)

I use Bose ones in my S9+ that were designed for an iPhone ten years ago. They work OK, but the cable is getting a bit 'sticky'.

Some really good prices on the Sonys now the M4s are out. Treat yourself....... :)

I have to wear hearing aids now, so I treated myself to an 'over-ear' set cordless BT set. They're Bose too - expensive, but worth it if they last ten years (which they should). (y)

I went for a better MP3 player so I can adjust the tone controls more precisely to suit my hearing and take my hearing aids out! I only tend to use earphones when we're on flights so Mrs Nod does the listening to cabin crew for me. Tried over ear 'phones and find it a bit overcrowded with specs, hearing aids and the cans!

I've adapted a few reusable masks so the straps go up an inch or so above my ears. Usually wear contact lenses so it's less of a problem unless it's sunny. If it comes down to it, I'll just take the aids out and ask people to repeat themselves until I hear them.

Devil's advocate? Have you been sold a set of second-hand headphones with a fault? If you have tried on multiple devices and they are having the same issue the common denominator is the headphones

Yep - spot on. Refund is already back on my card :)

My father (who wasn't one to waste money) spent an amount he considered "absolute robbery" on a pair of hearing aids. He later admitted it was the best money he'd ever spent :) They improved his whole outlook on life.

Isn't it just - especially with a mask too. :banghead:

I've noticed that when people are wearing masks, it's very hard for other people to hear them. I'm pretty sure most people especially in shops and pubs are "topping up" their hearing by lip reading.

Indeed. I couldn't believe the change either. I'd needed them for at least twenty years and had been 'topping up' as you say for all that time. I worked in a machine shop as a youngster and learned to lip read there, so it stood me in good stead - although probably destroyed my hearing too.
