Im getting my boyfriend a tripod for his birthday next week (dont know a great deal about photography myself, but have spent hours poring over the net recently!). He doesnt have any preference when i asked him as hes not been into photography all that long. I have narrowed the choices down to:

Velbon Sherpa 600r: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Velbon-Sherpa-600R-Tripod-3-Way/dp/B000A1T0VE

Slik able 300DX: http://www.cliftoncameras.co.uk/Slik_Pro_Able_300_DX_Complete

I am strongly leaning towards the velbon sherpa 600r, as it seems about the right weight not too heavy but still probs a fairly sturdy weight and seems to have ok reviews most places.

Does anyone have any opinions on the Velbon Sherpa 600r?

The Velbon looks to me to be the better one. It's also a bit lighter as well as cheaper.

For that kind of sub-£100 budget I would get this RedSnapper 283 with RSH-12 ball head. In fact I bought one for a friend a couple of weeks ago. Nothing to touch it for the money IMHO, and the ball head is exceptionally good value http://www.redsnapperuk.com/tripod-283+RSH-12ballhead.html I think most folks on here would agree, and it comes with a really nice carry bag :)

Mention Talk Photography and you'll get 10% off - phone up and ask for Joe.

I've had both Velbon sherpa and Slik tripods, the Slik broke, the Sherpa is still doing sterling service 5 yrs on with a mate both out and about and in his studio.

I have the sherpa 450r and have not had an issue with it
Use it quite a lot, reasonably light and does for me:thumbs:
