VDSL Faceplate - Phone causing FTTC broadband issues?

A quick question for those in the know, just to test my sanity.

My Fibre broadband has been getting slower and slower over the past couple of months. Dropped from 38Mbps to 17Mbps.
I've contacted my ISP (Zen Internet) and they say my banded profile has dropped and they have detected a fault with my line.

I've done a quiet test from the test socket and that has come back as okay.
They have also told me to remove the faceplate to access the test socket. On doing this their line test comes back as okay, so must me an internal issue.

We've then done some further tests by putting everything back together and tested each phone in my extension sockets one by one and have come to the conclusion that my business phone has a fault. It works just fine, Rings, makes calls, no interference but apparently this is causing the issue. Another phone in the same socket doesn't cause any issues so rules out the internal wiring.

I've been told now not to use my business phone and I should see my profile increased over the next week. Great if that is the issue, I can just buy a new phone, but, my understanding is that this new VDSL faceplate is installed to separate the internal wiring from the internet connection, so how is a fault with my phone causing broadband issues?

There are different types of VDSL faceplates as I discovered when FTTC finally became available in our village. I discovered I had two issues;

1. The alarm installation company put their extension directly on the incoming line; naughty naughty - moving it improved it a little.
2. The original incoming plate had the old screw connectors

So basically I bought the full and latest version of it like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00IPT4OVE and rewired the master socked.

My FTTC speed went up from 17 to 45. It then dropped again over time to 27, my provider send out a new router and it has been stable since.

Anyway the point of this story in relation to your experience is, the vdsl faceplate has definitely changed compared to the earlier model. If you have one of the earlier ones perhaps the separation wasn't as good as it was reported to be.

I have the latest vdsl mk3 faceplate, installed by BT when my FTTC was installed.

Nothing has changed since.

I may have found the fault. It looks like a message waiting switch was set in the wrong position on the phone. Some googling uncovered another person failing a line test when the switch was in position 1. I put it back to position 3 and got my ISP to rerun the line test and the fault has gone.

Hopefully that will solve my problem and speed should start to increase, but I'm still confused as to why that would cause issues with my BB in the first place due to having the all singing, all dancing faceplate that is meant to negate these issues.
