Put our Antara in to have some warranty work done ,couple of things sticky rear brakes being one of them . Garage phone to say rear discs are past it 27,400 miles !!!!!! ,then came the price of replacement ....... £980 + fitting WTF !!!! Guy asked if I wanted to go ahead and get them fitted ....eh !!NO ,said to him I'll be doing it myself and a lot cheaper than that .

Had the same thing happen with my VW Transporter, 2 years old, 25000 miles on the clock and told it needed new discs all round. Same as you I said I'd do it myself after their very high quote. It's now seven years old with four MOT passes and still has the same discs. Pads have been changed twice by my local garage and they say the discs are fine.
 
vauxhall wanted to charge me £250 + fitting for a handbrake release cable for my VX220

I went to lotus and they did it for £47 fitted

Vauxhall dealer prices are insane
 
Bought mintex discs and pads for £108 delivered will fit them at the weekend .
 
disks at 25k miles? My Saab is still on originals at 78k, and I've got a 2.3 Turbo Auto.
 
I was unfortunate enough to own a Vauxhall Vivaro. Living in Cardiff, I was looking for the right van , I came across one,or at least thought I did with a Vauxhall dealer in Burnley. I drove to Burnley to collect the van, on the way home ( some 140 miles or so from Burnley) the engine management light illuminates and to cut a long tale short I end up with a new engine fitted under warranty. When the van went in for repair at a local Vauxhall dealer the dash lights were working, upon collecting my van I noticed that some of the dash was not illuminated, Vauxhall would not cover the problem instead they quoted me £145 to change the frigging bulbs. When I questioned their pricing, apparently it is very labour intensive to remove the dash and renew the bulb. A local garage did it for £25.00 and took him 20 minutes tops.

new discs on the focus of fail were about 600 fitted and i thought that was expensive. Is this a main dealer perchance ?
 
Unfortunately Vauxhall employ fitters not mechanics nowadays ,garages don't try and sort they fit new for old and we the punters get well and truly ripped off . I'm fortunate as I have decent mechanical knowledge and I'm able to sort most things or know someone who can help . People with less knowledge end up getting screwed bigstyle unfortunately

time to check an independent me thinks

the last fix on the focus of fail was 550 notes cheaper at our local indy than it was at main dealer. Although as you say if you can do it yourself thats going to be cheaper still... unfortunately anything more complicated than a chainsaw is beyond my ken

Changes in pad material after asbestos was banned had necessitated the use of softer discs so they do wear out faster than they used to. Main dealers are notorious far wanting to change discs and pads way, way before they are at end of life though.
 
The last couple of disc/pad changes I did for mates was less than a quarter of what they were quoted by their dealers. I used good parts, took my time and everyone was happy.
 
i used mintex on mine, can't beat them for the price.

I used 1155 pads and they rattled until i daubed them up with some grease that I can't remember the name of! If you have 1155's and need me to find out what it's called I will have a look :) From the forum i was on at the time it was a known issue with the 1155

Copper grease probably.
Changing pads and discs is an easy job when I changed them on my previous car, I did it with my sons (14 and 20 at the time) we did on corner each and who ever finished first did the other one. I think I was quoted about £360 for the front discs and pads by the Ford main dealer. I did all four for less with upgraded discs and pads.
 
My opinion of Vauxhall has been forever tainted. I had a combo for light commercial use from new.

The wing mirror glass fell out. Took it to Vauxhall, replaced at a cost, if I recall, of £100. They would not cover it under warranty! Three weeks later, it fell out again. They replaced under warranty this time but....what the hell...lol

The bloody thing was a total mess from almost day one, horrible engine noises, clutch problems, oil leaks, broken suspension when it hadn't even carried any load! By the time it had 45k on it, bearing in mind this is a commercial vehicle....it was ready for the scrapheap and rusting all over the roof drainage channels. I looked after it too, meeting the maintenance schedule, making sure it was clean, free of salt and so on.

As long as I live I would never touch another Vauxhall. Awful, awful vehicle.
 
As I may have said before, whilst I have breath in my body and a say over what I drive, I will never drive a Vauxhall.
 
There's nothing about vauxhall cars that excite me.
We've a insignia at work. I've twice had the brake pedal go to the floor whilst driving, the view out the rear is awful.
We've an Astra van thats better. Simple old school diesel where the turbo comes in at around 3k revs and all power dies at 4k.

Our local mazda main dealer charges £100 an hour. My Tvr servicing costs me £45 an hour.
 
Surely there is something very wrong for your rear discs to wear out in less then 30k miles? Presumably there is no issue with the fronts?

Holy cow! Makes mine look cheap at £325 each end for disks, pads and sensors. Main dealer prices.

I like the look of the insignia but my mate at work said whatever you do don't get one they aren't built that well and have quite a few problems
 
Strange how this has turned into a hate Vauxhall campaign ,nothing wrong with the car just main dealers prices . Very typical of this forum these days and becoming very boring
 
@mxfun I was thinking the same seems like a lot of angst all over this forum lately
 
Its like everyone knows main dealers rip people off but they still take there cars there and get ripped off?

Find a good independent and move on folks.

Good advice but easier said than done often isnt it.
Like trying to find a decent plumber, electrician etc. and then when you finally find one, they're busy for months when you ring em. :banghead:

The main dealer I use will match prices for any work with any garage within a 5 mile radius. Add to that they are directly next to where I work, it's a no brainer to go there, plus I know they will fit the proper parts which I get discount on anyway so I'm onto a winner all round.

A good few years ago I had a similar conversation with my local Honda dealer about the rear discs on a Honda Accord which was under warranty and had done about 40,000 if I remember correctly. I basically made the point that the discs were either faulty or had a design fault to wear out so quickly (especially as the front discs were fine and you'd think they would be the first to go), Honda agreed to replace the discs under warranty and I paid for the pads only. Changed to an Audi before they needed replacing again as the Honda dealer said that the Accord wore the discs out a lot due to the brake balance apparently, anyway not considered Honda since.

Currently have a Nissan Qashqai with 57,000 and the discs are fine with that at the moment, isn't the Antara a similar size/type of car as the Qashqai? I'd expect similar wear rate unless yours is 4 wheel drive but even then not less than half.
 
There is probably a car mechanics forum somewhere moaning about all these Uncle Bobs and who don't appreciate the training and experience they have, as well as tooling and other overheads...

I'ev nothing against the car other than the brakes have failed on me twice, others love it but I don't like the visibility from my driving position.

True but good people are always busy. Plan ahead on servicing instead of calling when the light comes on. Ask friends for recommended garages. Drive arround your town look at garages and how busy are they. More importantly try someone new.
 
I don't think main dealers help themselves , a pet hate is the £50 - £100 charge to put your car on their diagnostic equipment so they can tell you what's wrong. I was having a lot of problems with a Toyota Diesel engine and the fault codes putting it in to limp mode - in the end I bought an obd2 scanner to plug into the car to get the fault codes and reset it - the cost on ebay? £11.99 !! Im not saying that you should rely on them , but you can get an idea if something is serious or not and if not you can sort it and reset it yourself.
 
I normally do my own discs and pads. My Audi was the only car where I had to admit defeat as without a ramp it was nearly impossible to get to the nuts that can undo the retainer for the discs.

900ish is severely taking the mick though. However which Vauxhall is it? If it is that v8 monster from Australia then it could be.

Very true I also have one of those however as you have said they are only a guide problem is you then google the code and find out you engine is due to explode in 5...4...3.....

But their eqpt probably didn't cost £11.99 from eBay!!

Makes you wonder why people book me to take photos of them when they could simply buy a camera from Argos for £50.
 
BMW garage near me £140 per hour labour charge (but you do get a coffee).:)

Very true but even if the kit cost 10,000 pounds do you think 25 mins on it is value for money @ 75 pound ? When you charge for sessions what breakdown of your charge is kit cost and what is labour?
 
As said earlier it is easy to be negative and I was guilty of that earlier in the thread
I think it depends on what your local main dealer is like our Toyota one is excellent and I haven't gone anywhere else since getting the yaris
I have had pretty poor service from our local pergeot dealer in the past but another one 20 miles away was excellent

I would be tempted to agree if I had that experienc. My local citroen dealers have been awfull. Citroen Perrys Birstall , Clemo citroen Heckmondwike, and Perrys Citroen Huddersfield just all three terrible.
