Just looked at an item I sold today on e.bay a used personal item . But looking at the payment details I have noticed they have charged v.a.t on it … surely you don’t pay v.a.t on used items or have I got it wrong ??
This bloody govmt are the biggest robbers since king John ..
come back robin of loxley all is forgiven

Just tried to contact them it’s like pi***ng into the wind grrrrrrrrrrrr

If you buy a secondhand camera from say MPB IIRC you pay VAT on the transaction....... presumably because they are a VAT registered company.

If that is the case then the question is, is the eBay seller a VAT registered business???

I found this on the .gov looks quite clear ?!

another thing that I never knew was,

if you sell more than 30 items or have sales with a total value of £1,740 in a year .........eBay ask you for your NI number and include you in an annual report that they by (HMRC Law) have to send to HMRC............. that's the kind of "priority" level the Government now concentrate on

(there are also reporting rules if you sell an item over £6,000)

I'm 79 years old soon ......... don't ask me what I think about how we have and are now being governed ....... it really is a general [PLEASE DON'T TRY TO BYPASS THE SWEAR FILTER] situation ..... maybe there are 2 "t's" in the word

Not hard to exceed that amount with camera gear

My wife was charged VAT on a scarf sold for £1.50. It was just a one off and the first thing she's sold for weeks. Previous sale was for a china ormament for £4.50

How does she get that money back?

It has been said that we all think tax is a good thing, until we have to pay it.

I think many of those need an adjective or two attached to them... :naughty:

Aye, this can catch people out who might want to put used gear through their VAT registered business, but for personal use.

Excellent idea and thanks for pointing it out.

I should have prefixed each entry with "good and useful". :)

I’m most definitely not v.a.t registered .. and there’s not any possible way that I can see to contact either e.bay or whatever tax office they use to rectify it .looking at my account on there this has been going on for most of the year ..
Sad but true it looks like under this labour govmt we are now living in a virtual communist state where every aspect of your life is monitored to see what the state can get out of you.

For buyers
  • UK sales:
eBay is required to collect VAT on certain orders delivered to UK addresses, especially those up to £135 from outside the UK or from a non-UK business with a UK-located item.

    • EU sales:
As of July 1, 2021, all goods imported to the EU are subject to VAT, with the previous €22 exemption for orders removed.
    • How it works:
You will see the VAT included in the order total at checkout, and you can view and download a tax invoice from your Purchase history.
    • Returns:
If you receive a refund for a transaction where eBay collected VAT, eBay will refund the VAT to you as well.
For sellers
    • VAT on fees:
As a UK-based business seller using Managed Payments, you will have 20% VAT added to your eBay fees, including listing, final value, and optional upgrade fees.
    • VAT on sales:
As a seller, you are responsible for complying with all tax laws, which often means including VAT in your item's price for business-to-consumer (B2C) sales, as most buyers are not VAT registered.
    • Overseas sales:
You must inform overseas buyers about potential import charges, which are determined by the destination country and are separate from eBay's fees.
    • Record keeping:
You must keep accurate records for VAT reporting and can use accounting software to help manage your eBay VAT obligations.

Britain is nothing like a communist state.

For all its many faults it's still one of the free-est and most civilised countries on the planet.

In your eBay details have you erroneously marked yourself as VAT registered or a business seller ?

Who has been charged VAT? The buyer of the item on the bid price?

no myself the seller and on more than one item , only recently noticed it

Given VAT is a purchase tax paid by the buyer and collected by the seller (in both cases only if the seller is a VAT regsitered business), that makes no sense at all. The only place VAT should come in for a UK private seller selling to a buyer in the UK is on the fees ebay charge.

I'm afraid it sounds like you are going to have to struggle with dealing with eBay to resolve it - very strange if they have retained 1/6 of the sales price as VAT based on the information you have provided
