Yes
I normally do motorsport stuff in fact this question came from a friend of mine who will like to sell images to automotive magazines(possibly automotive companies in the UK too).

Providing the fact that he is shooting very high quality images, which already have been used in magazines(Import Tuner, etc) and companies websites in the US, I was wondering how much he or his agent should charge a UK magazine for a set of say 10 to 15 images.

Does anyone actually achieve in getting these rates???

The hardest part will be to get an editor to even look at your work!!!! There're lots of people already doing what you are trying to do. It's very likely they will only pay standard rates unless you get a shot no one else has got and it's exceptional. Regards.

His images to be honest are pretty amazing comparing to the average of what can be seen in car magazines, I just wanted to have an idea about how much should he charge for a set of images. As for the NUJ rates, I've had quite a few lectures while at uni and what came out was that those rates are either to optimistic or in some cases too low which made me really confused.

Well, as union rates they are supposed to be applied universally by their members to protect the workers from exploitation....

Which is fine if the workers all stand together, but they don't and even amongst full time journos the membership rate is falling through the floor.

Personally, the only time you ever see a decent rate of pay for a job is when you are commissioned to do it ahead of the shoot. Just mailing in images in the hope of getting someone who has never had your work before to buy it is a hiding to nowhere - unless its unique photos of a news story.

That's not entirely true. Although an editor might not particularly be interested in buying your shots, they may commission you for further work depending on details of your history, your portfolio, and the styles of work their photographers already produce.

I wouldn't expect miracles, but I do firmly believe in the old cliche of 'you don't ask, you don't get'. Some of my most amazing jobs have essentially been born of that cheeky first question.

Well, it doesn't cost anything to send an email, but I suspect that is why every person I know involved in editorial or media accreditation can show you their mailbox brimming with so many emails that they don't even answer them any more.

Seems to be particularly an issue with motorsport....

For feature sets I used to get paid between £250-300

I doubt they would want only 10-15 images as that would give them no real choice for a feature and its not enough for an event coverage.

modified car mag circulation has dropped dramatically in the last 3-4 year some are only getting arouns 10% of what they used to.

Unless he has shots that no one else has he won't be setting the price.
