UV filter degrade pictures?

I thought my pictures seem abit dull lately?
Then i thought.. is it since i put a UV filter on it?
Coudl this be the cause of my noise and dull pictures?
 
If you have a good quality UV filter it should'nt make a lot of difference, but cheaper UV's can degrade the IQ.
 
If you have a cheap UV filter then yes, they can degrade your photos.

What make is it and how much did you pay?

Give it a test - take two photos of the exact same subject with the exact same settings, one with and one without the UV filter and look at the difference.

Its a kood off 'ebay' paid about 5 quid?
 
Yep, thats the problem then.

I also use Hoya Pro filters. Cost about £30 each.
 
I've got a couple of Kood filters...they do a cheap range and a mid-quality range which are acceptable.

I bought a 200L recently....usual "filter fitted from new" statement. I stuck the lens on the camera and fired away for 10-12 shots.....bloody awful....diabolical. Off with the filter....brilliant.

I was so stunned at the filter's image degradation that I contacted the seller to tell him what he'd been missing using such a crap filter.

Ahhh....I bought that filter to sell the lens with....I' use Hoya Pro's normally.

Cheap filters should come off with the lens cap.

Chers ladies and gents, I'll go out and check it tonight with some test shots.
Could explain the noise.
 
I use B&W F-Pro filters for all my lenses. Very good quality and made from brass so are less likely to fuse to other filters. Managed to pick them up for around £10 form HK... bargain! :)
 
Don't put cheap filters on a quality lens, or even a budget lens for that matter. I always have a filer on the front of my lenses, mainly for protection. Yup they aren't cheap, but I factor that into the cost of buying the lens.
 
You're answering your own question the best way vecsri, by test shooting (hopefully) with and without the filter. I agree with the others here about putting cheap glass in front of an expensive lens, I have all sorts of filters from cheap to expensive but I'll often take even the 'good' ones off before shooting..
 
I've found even the best UV/skylight filters drop the IQ and recently have just got rid of them. Its worse than you think actually - try it and see what I mean!

Only time I use the filters now are CPL's or ND's - every other sort of filter effect can be achieved in photoshop.

Id just want them to protect the lens... like Marcel, I had a drop of the camera and the filter was damaged but not the lens...can't do that in Photoshop!! :D

Might remove them before shooting important stuff now though :thumbs:
 
Nah, I don't do that bit with photoshop - that's the bit for the insurance ;-)

Meant to say, use a lens hood all the time - deflects most of the crap without actually getting in the way!
 
Not sure about other marques but most of the higher end Canon lenses have a sacrificial front element than can be replaced for little more than the cost of a good/v.good filter.

Good price, they are normally £30-£50.

I'v heard B+W are the best filters you can buy.

Well you can certainly see the difference. The first picture has some ghosting with the filter on (halfway down the lamp post). The rest seem clearer, Unless focusing has changed, but I'll assume it hasn't.

I've just checked warehouse express, their b&w protective filters are £33-£73
 
I too only use the hoya pro1d lens protectors.... just plain multicoated glass....
