One of the guys I work with has kindly let me play around with his Nikon D80 so I can try to remotely operate my SB800 flashgun.

Downside is I have no idea how to do get the built in commander to work and I dont have the manual.

How do I set it? Thanks.

Right, We've figured out how to get the SB800 to fire with the D80.

Is it possible to stop the D80's built in flash from firing aswell as the SB800???

No the on-camera flash has to go off - it is this that "instructs" the SB800 what to do. It won't interfere with your exposure, so don't worry about that.

True, leave it on -- on the settings menu and it won't contribute the lighting, or you can adjust it to add extra light.

excellent. Thanks for the replies.

The downside is i can't do it with my own D50 so i think its time to upgrade...........mmmmmmmmmmmmm D300 if funds allow.

Hi all,

I have a D80 and the internal flash is broken (it pops up but doesn't flash anymore) I'm not to disappointed about losing the internal flash, but it would be great if I can still run the D80 as commander mode for my SB800. It used to work when the internal flash worked, but it doesn't anymore, even if I turn off the internal flash in the commander settings.

Any ideas how to make it work again without having to take it in and having the flash fixed would be greatly appreciated!!!

As another thought... I have a SB800 and a SB600 - can I use the SB800 on the camera as a commander and have it nor fire? so that just the SB600 fires off-camera?

Thanks,
Dan

Yes, you can do that too.

Or you could buy a D70s, and have the added luxury of massive flash speeds.
If your going from a D50 dont overlook the gem that is the D70's.
