A friend had their iPhone stolen yesterday - they've just a couple of months on their contract and could get a new sim but said the iPhone sims only fit an iPhone? (Ie they can't buy a cheapy phone in Tesco or dig out an old phone somewhere). Could they buy an old sh iPhone and put it in that? Then they could start a new contract in a couple of months with a more up to date phone.

Sorry if this is a silly question, I know nothing about iPhones (or Android etc). But I'd like to help them out and would even consider buying them a s/h phone if that was an option that would work.

is it a micro sim?
Not sure, I think so? He said they told him they could send him a new sim but he has nothing to put it in and I said he could get a cheapy phone (to do for a couple of months) and he said the sim was too small to fit in a regular phone?

If its a micro sim (if it was an iPhone 4 or 4s then it would be) you can get an adapter to put it in a phone that takes standard sized sim cards.

If its a 3GS or earlier it'll be a standard sim

If he's getting a new SIM, simply ask for a "normal" one and then he can slip it in the cheapy and get a new microSIM when the new contract starts....
