Using a spotting scope

Hi folks, really keen to photograph birds etc in the garden with the Nikon D80 I,ve just purchased. However, until I can afford the 70-300mm VR lens, I was also thinking about using a spotting scope. I know that for astro scopes you can get camera adapters, so I was wondering if it is possible to get a camera adapter (Nikon fit, obviously) to use a spotting scope in conjunction with the D80 (prime focus, or otherwise).

There's a wealth of info out there....just Google "digiscoping".

I have an adapter that fits my Nikon :gag: Spotting Scope to the front of a lens with a 58mm filter thread....different adapters for different filter sizes.

I originally tried this type of thing with a Nikon (:gag: again) P&S body...it's a better option as the concept works better if the lens front element is close in size to the eyepiece diameter.

Google away, there's loads of info out there.

I can see its rather an involved subject, with different ways to skin the cat.
My thoughts were that you needed to do away with the 'normal' camera lens and use an
adapter that fits directly on the camera body and has a 'standard' astro lens diameter tube at the other end - 1.25" that fits where the spotting scope lens fits. Maybe it doesn't work that way. On a couple of websites it mentions needing a T-ring for the camera - I guess this screws onto the front of a lens (67mm thread for the D80) and a T-ring camera adapter to use with a scope. So this is another approach. Lots more research to be done, me thinks!
