It looks like I have found a forum with mature enthusiastic members, well at least I hope so.

I'm ok with the camera side of things, just the PC side, lets say I'm from the background where you composed the shoot in camera rather than with software.

So may need help with the PC.

Welcome David. Many on the site have gone from film to digital (and some of us back again!) so there should be plenty of support available. Have a look at the tutorials on the site, but also people will point you towards certain Youtube channels if you are comfortable with that.
At the end of the day, it's always best to get it right in camera, but the advantage of digital is that it allows you to experiment and try things out without waiting to finish a roll of film etc. The better your results in-camera, the less you need to faff about with on the computer. However if you need to tweak the results, you can do so with software. When you are ready, post some images in the appropriate section of TP and ask for help - you'll receive it I'm sure.

Hi David, And welcome aboard TP, looking forward to hearing from you and maybe seeing some of your images on the various forums. "Enjoy"

You still compose in the camera.

Then the RAW file is the negative, and your software is the darkroom, and your monitor (or printer) is the paper you print on.

What software you use will determine how much 'editing' such as changing contrast, exposure, burning and dodging. Digital also allows you to add filters after the fact, easily get rid of dust and hairs, clone out errant details.

Unfortunately it won't be straightforward to choose which software to use until you have used some and discovered what it can do, and what your photography will benefit most from.

Film makes you take decisions in camera, digital allows you to experiment and be flexibly lazy!

An alternative is set up a JPG profile in camera that you are happy with, then use this. This is the equivalent of getting Boots or any other high street film developer to process your image and print it. You may find that for your purposes you don't nee dto do much (if anything) on teh computer - other than view your images

Hi David and welcome from Wales. The editing side can seem daunting at first, but once you get used to the different process you'll be away.

Welcome to the forum David, there’s lot’s of helpful people on here so if you need any advice just ask away :)
