Use of Boom Are in Studio

Looking to invest in a boom are for the studio but was wondering what attachment if best to use for portraits.

do i need a softbx of could i get away with using a modelling dish?

Recently got the lencata parallel one -fantastic bit of kit. Looks like a giant dinosaur with an octobox on it! You need a fair amount of space though.
Yep, that one isn't for your average home studio:)
Back to the original question - you use whichever tool produces the result you want, and of course that applies whether you're using a boom arm or not.
The smallest Lencarta boom arm will safely support even a 70cm beauty dish fitted to a large flash head.

The name of the game, when using a boom arm, regardless of make, is to balance it correctly - this means that you move the counterbalance weight to the point where the boom is balanced and doesn't actually need to be tightened. NOT balancing it properly, and relying on locking the adjustment, causes excessive strain and is dangerous.
 
think im gonna go for the lencarta one, just need to sell two Lencarta Background Reflectors first
