Hey there,
I'm looking at buying a Jobo Giga One Ultra hard drive. I've heard that the pins in the CF slot on the unit aren't that strong though. (if they snap then the CF slot can't be used :bang:).

Does anyone here use a Giga One and if you do, do you know if you can download onto the device using the USB connection either direct from the camera or via a card reader?

Any general feedback on the Giga One would be appreciated too. :):)

Thanks in advance.

I think you could only download to this device if it supports OTG connections, and thats both ends supporting OTG ie the camera and the device. Reading Andy ROuses review it looks like the device does support this, as its what he uses to back up his Giga Vu Pro, but not sure if your camera supports this feature to be able to write to it ? If that makes sense :)

The giga one is about the most useless thing I have ever bought for my camera kit.

As a card reader or USB hard drive it's perfectly useable. As a portable download device its actually worse than useless. The combination of a high rate of failed downloads and there being no way of knowing if a download was successful if you don't actually see the counter hit 100% make it a nightmare to use. Throw in a horribly slow transfer rate, poor battery life AND the fact that you need to open it up and pack the gap under the drive unit so it doesn't fall off its pins and you have possibly one of the worst products ever.

Other than that, it's OK. :D

OK it's a lot bigger, but if you make a trip to your local PC World or Currys, you'll get a laptop for about the same amount. Bigger screen and if it supports Express Cards you'll get faster downloads. Plus with wireless internet you can keep in touch with your favorite forum.

I looked at these devices, but in the end opted for a laptop. It also means I can edit on the run as well. Saves a bit of time

Thanks for the replies. Its good to hear what the reality is as opposed to the sales pitch.

IanC - I use 5D's and 40D's so I'll check that out. Cheers ;)

dazzajl - As IanC asked: Are / were you using the Giga One OR the Giga One Ultra. I know there were problems with the first Giga One but 'I've heard' the Ultra has overcome a lot of the issues. (i.e it was a piece of %$£&.)

I need to use portable hard drives rather than a laptop as I'm going to be using the gear outside for 4 months and not returning to home / base to do downloading. The equipment will to be powered by solar and the power required to keep a laptop going (60W) is impractical and not cost effective. A laptop would be nice but its not an option this time.

Thanks again. Keep the info coming.
Cheers
:thankyou:

It's the standard Giga One and NOT the ultra.

Glad to hear it's been sorted though, god did it need it.
