I want to buy a USB c splitter but I'm confused.
On the recommendation of several on here (thank you) I bought a crucial 2tb back up drive.
I use my laptop (Dell XPS 15 9570) as a desktop most of the time and have it connected to a Dell dock via the one USB c port.
So, buy a splitter and connect both the laptop and the external drive.
When I research splitters they all seem to be to use audio or connect with an iphone.
Data transfer is listed a no no.

Advice as to what to buy would be much appreciated.
 
Rather than splitter, try searching for usb c hub with usb c output - they are a few options out there
 
Can't you just connect the external drive to the Dell dock? Daisy-chaining docks is likely to end badly, especially if you're powering the laptop through one of them. If the Dell dock doesn't have spare USB C ports just use a USB C to USB A cable. You're unlikely to notice any difference in speed between USB A and USB C, as long as the USB A is USB3 of course.

do your research. I paid about £50 for one off amazon. It is a three USB C out and a 4th port for power delivery. The reviews were good so I thought I would take a punt. When plugged into my Apple M1 mini, it can sometimes struggle with external drives and disconnect them without warning. I try to just limit its use for memory card downloads and other non essential ancillaries. I haven't even tried to use it for any kind of power delivery (PD). I think I am pointing the finger at apple not providing enough power out of their ports as opposed to the device itself, but I am not techie enough to be certain.
 
Turns out I can connect directly to the dock after all. Thanks to all, especially Jonathan for pointing out the obvious.
