Hello

A friend has asked me to take a few shots of him running this morning to go into a magazine !! now i have my 18-105 kit lens and a 70-200 1.8 and a 50mm 1.8

what do you think best lens to use will be ?

any any advice when shooting runners

do i want the shutter speeds to be 1/500 upwards or a little bit slower to try catch the motion as well?

thanks
Karl

Shoot both, then decide what you want or what comes out best. It's easier to get the person to extend the shoot slightly whilst you are there but harder to get them back again if it doesn't work.

Heading straight towards you I'd guess a high shutter speed. Side on could be good with some blur, perhaps use flash as well?

Use the 70-200mm f/2.8 and shutter as high as you can, the AF speed of the other 2 lenses wont keep up.

use the 70-200mm it will be spot on remember to use the focus limiter switch and remember not to let him get to close.
heres some shots i took yesterday with my 70-200mm of our dog and his ruddy quick for a little guy.

hey scott, presumably on CF , did you use 3d focus as well? Took a couple of photos of the Mrs only walking her horse straight at the camera on CF - worked well, looks like it will cope with much faster moving subjects as well? (D300s)

hi dave this was single point focus and afc.(forgot to try 51pt 3d and the dynamic 9 21 and 52 pt)
will try over the next couple days.
this was on the d700, the d300 will be just as good. have taken pics of cars doing 70mph+ coming straight at me on a bridge with the d300 and siggy 50-500mm with no probs also irds in flight coming stright towards.

Thanks Scott. Must get some more practice, I am really not yet getting anywhere near the best out of the D300s, what an amazing bit of kit!

birds in flight here we come!

I'd use your 70-200 in AI servo mode and fire off as many shots as you can in burst mode. If you can shoot in portrait orientation with the focus point on the runner's head (this will depend on your camera though as some will struggle on an AF outside of centre).

I'd shoot at f/4 to get the background blown out. Get your friend to run at jogging speed and exaggerate their movements.

You could also try some panning shots from the side. Get your shutter down to 1/40s or so and try those. You can shoot that on your wide as well to give more variation.

If it's for a magazine I'd shoot some tight shots (so with less space around them) and some loose shots (so giving them options for laying text out around the picture).

If you've got the option of using a light off camera it can be quite nice to shoot really low down on a wide angle with the runner coming into the shot, lit with the light source hitting them head on.

Above all else though shoot as much as you can!
