Hi i am in need of some urgent computer advice.
My wife loged into her online banking to find the over £200 has been taken. After a bit of investigation I found that the money had been through paypal. My first thoughts were that she had replied to a phishing email but she asures me that she had not and has recently forwarded phising emails to paypal.

When i opened my web browser i noticed that some one has spelt paypal wrong 3 times and that several items off ebay had been pasted into the browser.
No one has access to our computer and these sites were accessed in the night. We connect to the internet via a wireless router and the computer has a fire wall etc.

How can they have goten onto our computer and done this and is there any thing i can do?

paypal have been informed and thankfully stopped the transactions.

any help would be great

The first thing I'd do is run spyware detection software. I think you have to assume your PC is compromised. Once happy that you're free from spyware and trojans particularly, I'd change all my registered passwords.

Remember and set wireless encryption on the router and password the router as well.

*apologies if I'm stating the obvious :)

You have almost certainly picked up spyware, possibly a keylogger or something that does a screengrab.

If you have an anti spyware program and it finds nothing then suspect that it has been nobbled so run 2 or 3 of the freebies such as Spybot Search and destroy and Adaware.

Don't know if know of Hijack This. Excellent little program for finding nasties, but not remotely user friendly so you'd need a good idea what to look for.

I assume you have informed your bank.

What have they actually got hold of, have they used your paypal details on ebay?
This type of problem must play in the back of most peoples minds when they go wireless.

the router is encripted etc thats why im stumped on how they have goten onto the computer. paypal has been informed as have both of our banks just incase. all the suff that has been bought on ebay has been on american sites. it looks like they tried to buy more stuff but there was no funds to pay for it.

I am going to flaten the computer and do a full reinstall of Vista as i was just running XP
