Uploading to YouTube

I took some video footage with my phone today and, when I transferred it to the computer, it shows as 415MB!

It's only 3 minutes and looking to take 2 hours to upload to YouTube. Can't be normal can it? Or is there something I need to do to it before I upload it?

the video is probably uncompressed, so the file sizes are massive!!

i'd run your video file through virtualdub (freeware), using full processing mode and xvid compression (and if there is audio too, set the compression on that to mp3). I'm no expert, but using that method i've just got a 30 second, 156mb out of camera video clip down to 10mb!

Ok, I'm not sure I understood most of that but, from what I can gather, Virtualdub needs Windows. I'm using a Mac.

ok, you just need some software that can compress both the audio and video.

Handbrake is cross platform, so might be suited to your needs! (there ight be better, but i'm not accustomed to those Apple jobbies)

What they do is demultiplex the video and audio streams into separate elements, compress them, then remux them back together to give you a much smaller, compressed file....a bit like Raw to JPEG.

Thanks Paul. Downloaded Handbrake and that's reduced it. Still 100MB though.

Will have to do shorter video in the future.

it's surprising how big video file sizes are!! Someone may come along that knows how to get it smaller and i'd be keen to know too

The thing is, there's the facility to upload the video straight from the phone. When I tried that, it recommended using the Wi-Fi otherwise I could incur charges. It then locked up my Wi-Fi!

It was only when I uploaded it to the Mac that I realised it was 415MB!

2 hours is still a long, long time to upload 415MB, what's your broadband speed?

Upload is about .70 mbits per second

Hi Marc, I could be talking utter tosh, but from memory, if you just import your video to iMovie and then when you export it from iMovie, either after editing or not, it gives you an option to alter the size.

ouch...no wonder it would take so long. BT may have the worst CS ever, but uploads of 16mbps are a godsend

There's also VLC and imovie.

Check out the recording options on your phone and experiment. I think mine is about 80mb per minute in full HD as it records in mp4 which is quite efficient. 640 x 480 is more like 20 ish mb per minute.
