Uploading new photos to LR

I hope someone can tell me if I am doing something wrong and/or a fix.

I thought that when I go to import photos from a card that by ticking the 'New photos' on the top line and the box, it will just highlight the shots that I have not previoulsy imported.
Conversely if I tick 'All photos' on the line and the box I thought that it would highlight all of the photos on the card, not just the new ones.

However the opposite happens

Have you checked the "Do not import Duplicates" box which is at the top right of the import screen.

With no duplicates selected they will be greyed out.

Why not delete or better format the card after downloading though (in camera).
We all forget sometimes mind

Probably the best idea.
I often forget to format, particularly if I have taken only a few photos.

It's not a big issue, just puzzles me.
