I am trying to decide on what processor I should upgrade to. I have the AMD Athlon 64 3200+ processor at the moment and 1gig of RAM and the MSIk8n platinum board ( which doesn't support dual core ) unfortunately, so that may figure in my upgrade also.
I am going to purchase the ozc 4 gig RAM pack thats a definite, and I was wondering do I need a quad core or will dual core suffice for Lightroom and photoshop ?

ps is it worth putting the scratch thingy on its own partition or would it be better giving adobe it's own hard drive, as a sata drive is also on my list :)
 
go for a intel quad.seeing you will have to upgrade the mobo anyway..the quad 6600 is really cheap at the mo and is more future proof.i take it you mean ocz memory..the q6600 will overclock to at least 3ghz even on the stock cooler..

I had thought of going down the AMD road still but only using dual core, it's terrible being so indecisive :)
 
I would seriously consider quad core options. If you have large files it makes a hell of a difference. I've been looking at a Mac Pro with twin quads. ( OK I know it's a Mac but you can play with them and get some idea of real world speed at Apple Stores) Converting a 25Mb file to a 250Mb file in CS3 seems to be almost instantaneous. Other process are just as fast.

Has anyone got any comparisons between a quad and dual core for the likes of photoshop? My understanding was it wasn't optimised for dual core any way, far less quad core. If that's right (and I'll happily admit I could be wrong) I'd be more tempted to go for a faster dual core at the moment e.g. the E6750.
 
If you are going for 4Gb ram make sure you've got Vista / XP 64 bit versions or you'll be wasting memory

my e6600 is ran happily at 3.0Ghz on the stock cooler :)
 
I have xp 64 bit so should be ok.
Dod good question, would hate to overkill the system with quad if dual would suffice.
Could get a new sata for the difference in price.
Can anyone help here, dual versus quad ?

A lot of applications dont support Quad Core processing. Mainly server/animation software. Not even sure if Photoshop supports Quad Core (by support I mean utilize). I have been out of the PC building arena for about 18 months as it was destroying my personal life so things have probably moved on considerably since then. I use Macs now.
 
Without trawling through the web etc, what am I likely to pay for a Mac and are there any specific models I should be looking at, and is there a second hand market ?

It is ta,... :-)

Anyway:

The Macbook - I use one of these with Aperture, though with 2GB's of RAM. Affordable, nice looking machines.

The iMac - Great desktops. Make sure you get 2GB+ of RAM. All fairly affordable.

Before you switch, make sure you are absolutely sure. Be bear in mind Windows can now be installed on the Mac very easily using Boot Camp.

I wouldnt worry too much about what core you get, just go for the highest spec you can reasonably afford that fits your needs. Any dual/quad core will knock the spots off your current kit. The better you get now the longer it will/should last
If you are a gamer then you'll probably want more grunt, like me so I got a quad 6600 with 4G and an nvidia 8800 GTS.
