Upgrading to a Canon 40d

I currently own a 400d with a Sigma 17-70 lens, but need to sell before i can upgrade to the 40d.
Would anyone know, if i would be better off keeping the Sigma lens and just buying the 40d body, or would i get an improvement in quality if i sold them both and bought the 40d with the canon 17-85 is lens?
Any help and advice would be appreciated.
 
I can't speak for the Sigma but I have the 17-85 IS and love it. Pin sharp and the IS is very good.
 
Upgrade the Body only, i dont rate the 17-85 and love the Sigma 17-70
 
I'd upgrade to body only too. The 17-85mm has just too many issues for me and, other than IS, I certainly wouldn't see it as an upgrade to the Sigma 17-70mm (that's not to say the Sigma is perfect either).
 
Many thanks for your advice, sounds like the sigma works well on the 40d, so that's what i'll probably do.
