i currently have a sony a77 which i have a jessops 360afd flash unit, im looking to upgrade this flash unit as the motor in it is starting to get stuck.
im not sure what flash i would need to buy next, ive started to look in to the hss flashes but dont know enough about them to make a dissision.

any help would be great thanks

On my a77 I use a Sony 58 flash and a Sony 42 flash. Second hand prices are around 200 for the 58 and 80 for the 42. Both work on hss mounted on the body or if I'm triggering the 42 from the 58. I also use pixel soldier triggers to fire off camera flash too.

Best thing to do is read Gary fried mans rebook on the a77 as it has a huge section on advanced flash use.

Mine does the same. Turn it off. Tap the back. Turn it back on. Usually sorts it! Mine did it within first head of ownership. Jessops store told me it was a common problem and to try that first.

I think nissin do a Sony flash with hss. Worth checking out too as they're a fraction of sony's cost but build quality is lots better than the Jessops.

Back when I was a Sony shooter I had two flashes. The Metz 50 AF-1 and the Sony HVL 42 AM which I picked up at a bargain price.

Of the two flashes I have to say I prefered the Sony slightly more mainly due to the fact the buttons made it so easy to change settings. The Metz is a very good flash too but I didn't like the interface. Changing settings whilst not hard, it wasn't very intuitive.

That said when I swapped to Nikon the first flash I bought was the Metz again. Because price/performance it's great.

The Jessops flash is a good starter flash but both of the above recharge far quicker and aren't as noisy as the Jessops one.

Hope that helps

I have 2 x 58am and although really good flashguns, I'm finding when doing shoots they have a tendency to overheat pretty quick which really is frustrating .. I'd suggest if you want to avoid this its worth trying a Nissin i622

Saying that, I'm getting an A99 soon and the Sony 60 flash, hope they've sorted the overheat issues .....

I have the HVL-F43M, which is a great flash, also has an LED video light etc.

But it does require an adapter to fit onto the old Sony hotshoe as now Sony use a Multi Interface hotshoe on the newer cameras
