Hi all,

I was going to post in the 5D3 thread but thought best not to, I hope a seperate thread is ok.

I currently own a 500d with a 17-55 f2.8, 17-55 std, 55-250 and a fixed 50mm.

I'm looking to upgrade to the 5D3, primarily for the low light benefit. Unfortunatly, as far as i understand the 17-55 f2.8 won't fit the 5D3, correct me if im wrong. In which case, i would need to sell all of the 500d related stuff and buy a 5D3.

So, the body is decided but. what to get for a lens  I'm primarily looking for low-light and portrait photography, long range stuff isn't on the cards for now.

I've spent some time researching lenses and think I should go for the Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM.

Does this seem a suitable starting point, or can anyone recommend another lens?

Thanks for reading

Yep, the EF-S lenses don't (I think I'm right in saying) fit full-frame bodies.

Which 50mm lens to you have? The F1.4 is pretty good for low-light work, if you can live with a prime lens...

Oh yeah, it's the 1.8 - the £90 jobbie. That works ok does it, only EF-S doesn't work on the 5D3? I don't mind working with a fixed lens, just not forever :)

I also forgot to mention I'm a bit of a brand head, so any lens recommendations would be canon, please :)

The Canon 50mm f/1.8 is an EF lens so will work on the 5D3. You're right, EF-S will not work on a full frame body.

If you like the 17-55 range on your 500D then the full frame equivalent is 24-70. If you need something with more range look at the 24-105, but this is f/4.0, not f/2.8.
