Yes
i'm looking at upgrading from my 55-250 is ef-s lens and replacing it with a 70-300 is ef

This will give me some much sought after extra reach but I don't know if there is much difference in the quality between the ef-s and the ef lenses

I think this could be a good upgrade all advice is welcome

I was hoping for a higher quality lens as well as reach, I've done some shooting with a 100-400 lens and it was really heavy for walking around so I'm hoping this will be the compromise

An improvement on image quality with a bit more length is the target

And of course without having to spend fortunes

I think you need to be specific about which lens, AFAIK there are several and they vary from worse than yours to very good (the L version)

The one i'm looking at is Canon EF 70-300mm F/4-5.6 IS USM Lens

I have currently a Canon EFS 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom AF

A faster autofocus would be better too

Afaik and I think what Phil is hinting at, your 55-250mm has probably better IQ than the 70-300mm. You might be better just trying to get hold of the more recent versions (with STM etc.). The 70-300 will have a better build quality and obviously work with full frame bodies, but if that's not why you want it, you might be better looking elsewhere.

Edit: oh Actually I might be confusing it with the earlier 75-300.... Ignore me

At the moment I don't think full frame is where I want to go

Forget it, just noticed the L starts at 4.5 (not 4). :$

However the 70-300 isn't rated any better than your current lens, if you want an improvement and to stay with Canon - the L is the lens for you. Look for 2nd hand ones. Or if you're looking for as cheap as poss, an early 70-200 f4L won't be as long, but you can get a TC later.

The 70-300 won't be much different in focal range to the 55-250. For one thing 50mm on a tele doesn't amount to much and with a bit of focus breathing you'll narrow that down further.

The 55-250 IS is a great little lens and I wouldn't change to the 70-300.

If you want more range look to a 400 or even a 600mm lens for an upgrade.

Or 150-500, or 150-600 c?

Is the sigma as good a build quality as the canon?
