Called at CCL at Bradford yesterday and bought myself a copy of Windows Vista Ultimate.
I have to say after only installing it less than an hour ago it is totally different to XP Pro I have been using for the last few years..

Everything working apart from my scanner HP Scanjet 5200C but will have a trawl round the net to find some drivers soon.;)

Will get Photoshop and some more programs installed now, Back soon..

PS: Any tips on using this new OS would be gratefully received..:help:

Have you installed a good backup application?

Have you installed a good backup application?

You mean like Ghosting the drive like I did with XP or something different..

I think his posted was a bit tongue in cheek mate :D

Funnily enough I installed Vista today too, I'm using the 30 day trial period with a view to purchasing the Home Premium soon.

I did try the Betas, and missed XP too much, but I think it's high time I upgraded soon.

My tip is to not use the default Admin account, create another account for day to day use (can be admin). The new security features get very fussy if apps try chnage the registry, etc of the main admin account.

It gets round a lot of the reported problems of having to run apps as admin to let them work properly (but breaks other stuff such as drag and drop).

tip of the day: get a proper operating system ;-) why pay good money for something that is broke?

and contructive comment of the day goes to...............

Brummie

congratulations, obviously a proud moment:clap:

Actually it was a very serious comment

so thank you for the award and yes i am very proud.

Sorry - clearly my mistake. You must have overlooked the part where "any tips on using THIS new OS would be gratefully received" was written.

Easily done but i wouldn't worry too much about it.

I was reading on Cnn or somewhere about one of the techy guys who switched and his biggest problem was indeed getting drivers for stuff as allot of them just aren't out yet. I don't have a fast enough computer to run it so XP it will have to be till I feel like putting 2g of RAM in which is what is recommended.

Apology accepted. It was the best tip available IMO, don't 'use' it.

Can we have a new forum rule?

Mac (l)users are forbidden from posting smart arsed remarks on threads asking for genuine technical assistance?

Pretty Please?

So Tim how are you finding it after 24 hrs??

ive got it, once i got the soundcard working, its was great, and has been for over 3 weeks. no issues, doesnt seem broken, and all my software works fine

To be completly honest I have just come in from a 13 hour day mate so just switched on..:(

Still finding my way around but the most annoying thing is (which must be disabled somehow) everytime you put a disc in to install a program it prompts you asking about the validation of the disc you are about to install..:bang:

There must be a way to turn this feature off as it is quite annoying..

Lots of other features that is new but of course will find my way around in due course..:) Maybe Marcel knows a little more than me as he has installed it too and can give me a few tips..

How many of you guys are running Vista.. Lots or just a few..

[EDIT] Still cannot get my scanner working but give me time..;)

been running it for two weeks on the laptop - no issues. Installations can be a bit if a bind but no worries at all other than that :)

On the verge of upgrading, just collecting the drivers I need, luckily my scanner has Vista drivers  Need a new version of Norton AV though

Tim you can turn that annoying nanny feature off!
start>control panel>Windows Security Center, find User Account Control, and turn it OFF

I've never considered one of the lesser known AV software's  Can they really offer the same level of protection as Norton or McAfee?

I have used the free version of AVG for years and cannot complain, Works very well IMO..:)

matty.. Good tip my man, Thats got that sorted thanks..

Next tip guys, Don't be shy it all helps..:naughty:

I think so....TBH I use Avast which is FREE and has never let me down...... only never swapped because its on my machine and keeps updating itself without fault.

Mr THX. You are quite correct in quoting Avast but I installed it only a few months ago after using it some years back with success and it slowed my internet right down to a snail pace..:( Never thought it could be Avast but uninstalled it and everything was flying again, I don't get that trouble with AVG... Weird..

Mr THX said:
Move away from the computer......................towards the fridge ...............put your feet up and have a beer fella....:D

Wise words mate.. ...

if any drivers dont work, find the driver, right click on it, select properties and then find Compatibility mode, tick the XP box...

im all tipped out now Tim, AVG is my antivirus of choice

I'm busy installing Beer , the Premium Pro edition

//edit//

I use AVG , it works & it's free :)

In that case can we stop recommending canon cameras then?
Olympus/Nikon/Sony/Sigma are good enough. Why do we need more than one type???

no one asked for your recommendation at the start of the thread, you just did the usual OSeX users commend of "OOOH WINDOWS SUXS you should SOOO use a Mac!" when he was asking for tips on USING vista.

so thus its got nothing to do with recommending canon over anything else, granted if he'd asked for recommendations of which computer to use, you could quite acceptably recommend a mac, but seeing as hes quite obviously just BOUGHT a copy of vista and obviously runs a PC and thus OSX is clearly incompatible anyway the original comment was a bit of a waste of keystrokes.

anyone know a good soapbox storage service?

As long as Windows users are band from saying "Macs suck!!!" Since I run both at the same time I'm obviously immune from the rule ;)

Back on topic, I wouldn't say Vista was totally different to XP. OSX/Linux are, but its basically XP with a new skin and some added features here n there. The main thing that you do is switch off the stupid security thing that tells you everytime something changes. Turn off the firewall and it asks if you're sure so you say you are. It turns off and then something else goes "OMG dude no, something turned off the firewall!!!" Its just a really bad way of doing things.

Dude if i used or owned a Mac i'd probably vote for it over windows.

Its not me thats posting crap, i expressed my opinion and was shot down imediately. i didnt read in the rules i am not allowed an opinion. And as people have mocked mine has shown they have theirs. Its dutch door action.

Well when you post an opinion like that in a thread like this you can't expect to be anything but shot down, surely?

Nobody said you weren't entitled to an opinion, but theres a time and a place, and when someone asks for help, its not constructive or helpful in the slightest to put your opinions across, as whitewash says - he's already bought it, installed it and wants tips on it. Taking it back to the shop and buying a "proper" operating system wasn't an option.

/me also looks for a place to store his soapbox.
