Yes
I'm really surprised to find out how cheap Canon 550D's are...around £600. I currently have a 1000D but have been wanting to 'upgrade' for a while, to be honest I'm always disappointed with the clarity...now I've got my head round the settings  I want a camera to offer me a little more...(anybody selling one?heehee :-))

Do you think this is a good choice?

Also, any idea how much I can expect to get for my EOS 1000D with 18-55mm lens? 6 months old, mint condition.

Yes it would be a viable upgrade but I would say have a look at a 50D if you can, that would be a better upgrade than the 550D.

For selling you have to work on the current lowest price for your outfit new, I've seen it going for £339 so I would have said around the £250 mark.

Thanks for your quick response  I can't find the 50Ds on the Canon website, have they stopped making them?

Why would it be better to go down the 50D route?

Yeah, i picked mine up for about £340 so £250 sounds good, should i sell it on here or ebay? ;)

To me it looks like 50d has better build quality, bigger body, higher FPS (6.3), and higher max shutter (1/8000).

Where as the 550 has more metering zones and HD movie capabilities.

It would really come down to the difference in price for me, but i'd be tempted by the 50d, but then i have giant's hands.

Thanks Ady, great information, the 50D does sound more suitable for me - i'm not interested in video.

So why aren't 50D's on Canons website?

Also, is 15mp good enough, I was fancying the whole 18mp thing.....lol

Canon have replaced the 50D with the 60D, this means that 50Ds can be had fo bargain prices.
15MP is enough, the glass at the front makes as much or more diference than the number of MP.

I thought about the 550d but decided i did not want the video:shake:

IMO the 50d is a cracking upgrade and 2nd hand bargains can be found now, i love mine and wish i had changed sooner:D

Brilliant, thankyou :) Just been having a good nose at them all on the net. I think I'm going to look out for a second hand one, 50 0r 60D, maybe I'll get one on here!

Always worth a look on here
Thats where I got mine, tend to find the folks on here look after their kit very well:thumbs:

Hi, I am relatively new to SLR photography but I would recommend that before you look at upgrading your body you should look at upgrading your lens. I have used a 1000d with the 18-55 non-IS and IS lenses and I was surprsied at the difference a new lens made.

For £350 you could look at getting a sharper everyday lens, I have a Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 that is excellent. You could, alternatively, look at the Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 VC or the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 as both of these could be had for under £350.

Alternatively if you wanted to go for more reach you could look at a 70-200mm F4L which would give you excellent images (see link below for images taken with a 70-200mm F4L and a 1000D)

A new body will give you an image quality upgrade, but your camera can yield excellent results and if you were to use the money on better glass you would be surprised at how much of more of an improvement it would give to your images over a new body.

My 50d is for sale in the classifieds should you wish to upgrade your body and not the lens..:whistling:

I can also recommend the 50D, its a cracking camera!! I went from a 400D to a 50D and never looked back (and I also looked at a 40D and 7D, with the 50D coming out on top as the best all rounder). I got a barely used one for a very good deal, but it took me a long time to find one, they seem to be very rare these days!

The 50D will out res poor lenses though, so make sure you put some decent glass on it.
