Recently getting back into photography and got a 50D Now im wanting to upgrade as it lacks features that id like, but im struggling on choosing either a 7DmkII or a 80D (90D been a bit pricey still although id like the 4K potential.) I like shooting Birds, Flowers, Buildings and Clouds with maybe a bit of Astrophotography. Any thoughts?

I think budget and how much you have invested in Canon gear might need thinking about.

I haven't had a Canon since the 5D and haven't had APS-C Canon since the 20D but from what I gather the APS-C Canons don't exactly set the world on fire. In your place and if funds allow I would be looking to go mirrorless for the many advantages. Again considering that Canon DSLR's aren't anywhere near the front of the curve these days and thinking back to the Canon 5DII which our wedding was shot with I think anything mirrorless from the last 8-10 years from Micro Four Thirds and through APS-C and onto FF would be an improvement IQ wise with the biggest challenge both to the kit and the wallet being birds in flight.

So that's my advice, take a look at a used mirrorless system, if funds allow.

As above, this is definitely about your lens collection, if it’s significant there’s no point in moving systems.

But if not, it’s a very complex question.

But if staying with Canon makes sense, I’d definitely be thinking of an R7, if not this time, then definitely the next.

In fact; if you took up a free test drive, I bet you’d find a way of affording one ;)

I have a 7DII and it is excellent. No experience of the other bodies you mention, so I can't provide any comparison.

Generally it's the glass which is more important than the body.

I'd generally agree with that but in the case of Canon DSLR's v more modern mirrorless kit things have moved on very considerably in features, abilities and also IMO image quality.

Of course if the OP is happy with the IQ that these older Canon DSLR's provide, don't want the upgraded features and abilities, prefer ovf to evf or have done the sums and wants to stay with a DSLR then all is ok but I do think that more modern alternatives are at least worth researching... because just about everything has moved on so much since the days of Canon APS-C DSLR's.

What are the features you feel lacking in the 50D, as technically speaking, theres not much to be gained by going to the 7Dii or the 80D. I agree with the above something mirrorless will likely give you a a much larger jump in capability. However this depends again on what you feel is lacking from the 50D.

The 90d is a cracker, a big step up from both the 50d and the 7d2. And prices are coming down as more switch to mirrorless.

I've known a few people with 7D2s who have been unable to get on with them, preferring to use 5D4....s

My other half is one, the 7D2 went in to MPB and she got an R6 from Cambrian (which also replaced her Fuji kit)......

The Canon *0D series (10-20....90) reached a peak at 50D as the series was just below the 1D and 5D series in Canon's hierarchy. MC loved her 50D and 5D2, then the 7D came out, which marked the decontenting of the *0D series. Launch of the 7D2 coincided I think with the 80D which marked an upturn in the series, and the 90D was supposed to be a replacement for both 80D and 7D2... (it's like the D7500 replaced the D7200 and D500)...

Anyway Phil is right, if you are invested in EF lenses stick with Canon... The 50D is a great camera but you do not tell us what lenses you have - if you have L then great, if not I would upgrade the lenses. Only then would I upgrade the camera body....
