So I like to plan ahead and take everything into consideration and whilst I won't be purchasing a new camera within the next couple of months, I definitely will in the future. Currently I have a D5300 with a few lenses but after reading plenty and watching plenty, I'm after a full frame. but which? Ideally I don't want to spend over £1000 on just a body. What are some recommendations both Nikon/Canon/Anything else? Thanks very much!

Stuart is right, what do you want to get out of full frame that you can't get from your current camera?

What lenses do you have? If they are not full frame compatible your budget would likely need to at least double or triple or maybe quadruple if you need to replace lenses too.

Replacing the glass is more expensive! What do you generally take images of?
If it's birds in flight or sports then forget full frame unless you have £2k plus to spend ! If it's landscape or portraits then possibly you might require full frame........ but I know accomplished and published landscape photographers who shoot d7000 and d7100 bodies

Full frame is just not for people who say I don't want to spend more than £1000 just on a body and recommend me one. Just isn't and never will be.

I have a very good friend who shoots weddings professionally with Sony full frame and another friend who shoots with nikon d7200 and a sigma 18-35mm 1.8 art!

It makes no difference

Thanks to you all for the replies! Maybe I don't need/want a full frame at all but Holty seemed to be the only person with an answer to my question so thanks Holty. If I should stick with my dx lenses then is the d7100 or the d7200 worth the upgrade from my d5300 or should I just stay put with what I've got?

What do you hope to improve as the D5300 is a good little camera?

If it's low light photography you're after then I'd say FF is the way to go for the larger sensor and increased sensitivity at high ISOs.

If it's just a case of wanting a better camera then knock yourself out.

I have shots printed and framed from a Nikon D70. You don't need a brilliant camera, you need good glass and a good eye for a photo.

I would 100% get a grey market d7500 for £949.

I'm sure Nikon even said it was not a successor to the d7200 but a level above, even though they left out some important stuff so not to step on the d500 too much

James you say that you want a new camera, but you haven't explained why. You have a perfectly good one already. Or do you have some special requirement that it doesn't fulfil?

I wouldn't, only one card slot so no backup.

OP I think you need to answer why you want FF so that people can offer suitable options. I could list several but some or all may not be suitable. Do you have any FX lenses or would you need to replace your lenses too?

I would keep what you have and pick up some old Nikkor AI-S primes and a decent FX kit zoom. I believe they would work on your current body and if or when you decided to go full frame then you would only require a body.

Also the D700 is still a mighty ff body and there are plenty of used ones about under £500. So what if its only 12mp that's still a big old print.

I got lucky last year and picked up a Nikon FM2 24/2.8, 50/1.8 Nikkor s and the 100/2.8 e Nikon for £90.

Thinking of buying the D700 soon to go alongside my Fuji X system.

To answer the question directly, best full frame nikon for under £1000 would be a used D750 (one was advertised on here for just over £900). But the issue would be your DX lenses wouldn't be any use and you would need to spend at least the same probably double (£1k becomes £3k) replacing lenses with FX equivalents hence the questions.

If your looking at DX then a used D7200 is the best bang for buck Nikon DX camera out there. I sold a hardly used D7200 for £500 on here only a few months back. The upgrade from D5300 to D7200 would be dual cards, better AF, faster FPS, small inprovement in ISO, more deadicated controls, front/rear dials for shutter/aperture (less looking through menus). The D7200 is an absolute steal at £500-600 and is a great camera. Whilst the D7500 and D500 are probably better, the laws of deminishing returns comes into play. If buffer is an issue the D7100 has quite a limited buffer, the D7200 has a much better one.

The reason people ask further questions is because they have limited information to give you the best advice. There is no point us telling you to get a full frame camera if you have no full frames lens or budget to pay for them. From your post we weren't sure what lenses you had. What you will likely photograph can lead you towards a certain camera too. The D600/D610 would be cheaper than a D750 if you only did landscapes and didn't need the benefit of the faster and more accurate AF.

Are AI-S screw drive AF? If they are, the AF won't work on a D5300
