Afternoon All,

I'm heading to Portugal on holiday in August for 10 days and I'm contemplating upgrading my current lens, a Canon EF-S 17-85mm, before I go away. My camera is a 500D.
Ideally I'm only wanting to take away a single lens, but I could be swayed if there's better ideas out there.

I've been getting on ok with it for a while (3 years), but I do have some gripes about speed, low light performance, CA, etc.

I've read good reviews on the EF-S 15-85, but I'm not convinced it's a big enough step up considering the £300+ it'll cost once I've sold my existing lens.

Then there's the 17-55 2.8, but while the IQ will increase - I'd lose focal length and Wouldn't have budget for a 2nd lens with better reach.

A couple of people I know have recommended the 24-105L, but I do shoot wide quite a lot (going through my collection in Lightroom). Also, It would be at the very top of my budget, meaning I couldn't afford a 2nd, wider lens.

MAX budget is around £650, part of which is to be made up from the sale of the 17-85, and maybe my 50mm 1.8 II.

Don't know what to do!

Tamron 17-50 2.8 and Canon 70-200 f4L would be a nice combo and you could get them for around £550 used.

canon 17-55mm f2.8 IS is another option and going used could save you a few $$$ perhaps a trade on the 17-85mm you're trading in. Mpb photographic might be a good option.

When you say low light performance, is this for sunsets/sunrises or night shots in town extra, thought about a light weight tripod? The 500D hasn't got great ISO performance and a better lens would only improve it marginally. The 15-85mm has got some good reviews and it has the 4 f-stop ISO system.

Depends if range of f-stop is your priority

I am guessing by low light you mean you want a faster lens? 2.8 fixed apperture is what you would be after, plenty to choose from the 17-55 2.8 would be my choice for you.

I've just sold the 17-55 2.8 for 550 on eBay was listed on here as well it's a cracking lens

Im after a 17-55 as it seems to be a good walk around lens. £550 is a good price too!
