As title says, what would be the best upgrade from D40x.

What higher level models would my lens work with?

I'm trying to future proof myself a little, I dont want to spend too much money on lens, accessories etc for my D40x and not be able to use them on a new body.

both your lenses will work with any nikon dslr as will any other lenses as long as they are nikon fit :D

the same can be said of flashguns .

Ive got a D40X, and my next body is likely to be a D300 or D2Xs. Any lenses that work on the D40X will work on any other Nikon DSLR. :)

Bloomin eck - that really goes to prove it is the photographer not the camera - really love your LRPS set (and many others)

Thank you very much, very kind of you to say.:)

I just think of the body as a sensor with controls. In terms of image quality, its the glass that really helps to make a shot. As for the sensor, im really happy with the D40X. The resolution is plenty enough (Although sometimes id like the extra cropping power of say a 1Ds MK3) and colours etc are perfectly good. The main reason im looking at another body is the extra controls on the body. Id really like a AF/MF switch on the camera body, as well as more customisable function buttons. Also a proper battery grip would be nice. But when it comes down to it, most cameras (Including point and shoot ones) are more than capable of producing technically superb images. Having said that, im a gadget freak and love new toys. :D

if you are thinking of upgrading your body i would say stop.. and ask why?
i would be surprised to find any massively required features that are worth the investment just yet..
if you are just wanting to be careful about accessories, if it works with your d40 it'll work with other nikons..
heaping more praise on messiah khan check out his images, taken with the same body you have ... http://messiahkhan.deviantart.com/
i have a d80, a technically better camera (IMHO), but i cant yet take mages like that.
there are people around here with 6k of camera who cant touch his work
its not the camera that maketh the photographer, it the (wo)man that maketh the photographer... or something like that :)
