Im thinking of taking the above step but would it be worth it?

Any thoughts would be appreciated either good or bad

It depends on what particular feature you deem to be inadequate enough on the 500d to warrant purchasing an upgrade.

:plusone: is there a reason for the upgrade?

For raw image quality there'll be little if anything in it. However if you find the smaller body a little fiddly to hold, the lack of top LCD a pain and would like two control dials then it could be a valid upgrade if you fancy it. It also has a (much) better viewfinder, better AF, better environmental sealing, articulated screen, more frames per second and obviously a few other differences that I'm unaware of.

I went from a 550D to a 60D, although it's a backup for my 5D3, and it's a terriffic camera. Good ISO handling, wireless flash onboard, handy swivel screen with great resolution and good AF speed on all cross type focus points.

I had a 5D2 and 7D before the 5D3 and 60D and the 60D gets much more use than the 7D did. I actually prefer the handling of the 60D to the 7D (which I found a bit too finicky) and have got some great photos from the 60D so far.
