Hi all.

I am still fairly new to photography but i know the basics and i feel i take good pictures but i want to buy some more equipment but im not sure whether to buy lenses or to buy a new body. Question is what steps do you take and in what order, as i don't want to spend lots of money on lenses now and then realise i might need to buy a new camera body. I know i probably don't need a new camera body and mine does everything i need but i don't want to spend lots of money on lenses and then not be able to afford to upgrade the body when i need to.

I hope i have been clear, seems like i just rambled on. Also what are the thoughts about my kit ?

Equipment i have.

Sony a35k
18-55mm kit lens
Minolta 75-300mm (BigBeercan)

Any help and advice would be great

You say your camera does everything you need, so that tells me you don't need to upgrade right now.

Getting quality lenses is generally regarded as more important than the latest and greatest body, just remember that you're investing in a system now, so as long as you're happy to remain with Sony for the future - no reason from me no to be - then get some high quality glass.

Similar advice here.

You need to choose the system and invest in lenses knowing that you can then change bodies at a later date.

I for example am invested in Canon but now thinking of going m4/3 means that I will need to sell all my lenses, flash and body to make the move...unless Canon bring out a compact system that is compatible with my lenses and flash in which case I can just change body.

I don't know the Sony system well enough to comment on whether that is the right system for you.

thanks for the advice. yer thats what my problem is i like the canons just from what iv seen from other photographers, its early on in my photography hobby/serious career. The sony a35k is my first dslr camera, so im not sure if i will move to canon or not. I do like there cameras.

glass keeps it's value better than bodies.
Let's say for arguments sake that you stick with Sony for now (& tbh I don't see any reason for you not to) & then a few years down the line you do decide that you want to change system for some reason:
you'll probably lose money selling anything but you'll get more back as a % of what they cost from good lenses & an old body than from a new body & older, cheaper lenses

Agree. Lenses make arguably more difference to the IQ and also hold their price much better as bodies get superseded every year by the next best thing the lenses don't.

In my mind it all comes down to what you want to achieve in the long term. Do you envisage being a keen amateur shooting landscapes, or a pro sports shooter?

Chances are the Sony range can do a perfectly good job for the vast majority of shooters, and id a good enough system. Don't get fooled by marketing and ignore the (frankly boring) canon v nikon debate. All modern cameras are incredibly capable when used right.

My advice is to think what you want to shoot long term before spending, as it is expensive to change systems once you've acquired a fair bit of kit.

Thanks guys for the advice. Ill stick with the body and get a lens. I wanna get a 18-200mm lens or something around that, i dont want to keep changing lenses but i want a good one. I like to shoot action shots of sport, iv done a golf day before and i loved getting nice shots it just gives u a buzz. i also like taking photos of my neices

The other thing that may be an issue is many sony dslr have an in built image stabilizer so your lens would be less probably than for Canon Nikon as the lens has IS built in. The only small down side of a non main stream camera is that if you want to buy a used lens you may have less available.

Just something to consider also maybe if they do something like a 50-250mm that gives more reach and does not duplicate what you have now.

Hope you enjoy which ever you buy

Yer, ill have a look about. Does anyone know how to upload pics on TP

Easiest way is to upload to Flickr or similar and then post the image link into your post.
