Hi all just joined the forum and wanting some advice. I used to do a lot of photography mainly landscape and portrait. Haven't done much for the last decade but have found my appetite wetted again recently. I have started thinking about upgrading my camera body. I love my mark 1 canon 5d but would like something with good high ISO performance (and low noise when lightening shadows in post processing) and the option of shooting video. I really like using my current lens collection with a full frame camera, so would prefer not to drop to APS-C but I wouldn't completely rule it out. I would also consider switching manufacturer if I could still use my Canon EF lenses with a mount adaptor.
I have found myself completely out of touch with what options are currently available so would appreciate some expert advice.
So what do people think is the best value upgrade? I think my priorities are still probably landscape and portrait. A friend is keen on bird photography and is dabbling in astro photography so it would be nice to join him on his excursions.

Hi Dave and welcome to TP.

Only a suggestion but do check out the Canon R5 discussion in this fora ~ there is/are adaptors to use EF lenses and AFAIK it has worthwhile video helped by the fact that it is s mirrorless body.

Wow that R5 looks amazing. Unfortunately I don't think I could justify the cost. I should probably set a budget to this discussion. Say max £1k? Thanks!
 
Just look at a canon upgrade to your mk1,the 5d mk2 or mk3 .I can,t speak for the mk3 but I had the mk1 and upgraded to the mk2, the difference was like night and day so what the mk3 is like I don,t know
 
My first FF was a 5D Mk 1, and I then went to a 6D Mk 1 when that came out. Loved the native GPS tagging feature and the low light difference was amazing. Yes, the 6D Mk I is old now (and I sold mine ages ago), but if you want to keep costs down then it's an option.

Crikey - just looked up the prices on MBP: 2nd hand even the 6D Mk II is well under your budget and the Mk I is a steal now.

The more modern you go, the better the video, so there's that side too. Can you place your needs in order and help decide that way ?

Oh, and having used EF via an adaptor on Fuji X - it works, but it's not as nice as EF on Canon, and the lenses also have a different tone. I loved both the EF 70-200 variants I had, when shooting on Canon, but shooting on Fuji the magic was gone, which was a shame. Not saying you shouldn't adapt, but it wasn't the obvious win I thought it was.
 
You can use Canon lenses with the Sigma MC11 adapter on Sony cameras, and if you're willing to stretch you budget just a little you might pick up an A7III body. It does video well, 14.5 stops dynamic range, all the benefits of mirrorless focussing precision. Not as fast focussing with adapted canon glass as a Canon mirrorless, but much less expensive.

A secondhand 5d mk iii would be a huge improvement.

Personally I'd classify the 5d mk i & ii as hobbyists cameras, but the mk iii is such an improvement it jumps up into entry level pro gear.
 
I’d say check out the Eos RP or at a squeeze the Eos r... think you’ll like either very much!

What would you say are the main big jumps from 5DII to III? I'm trying to consider if this is a worth while jump up, having used the II for around 10 years but looking for some good improvement in low light for gig shots, and same as OP, bring up shadows in PP with less noise
