I use a Canon 5D.
100-400 for nature.
Canon 28-200 EF 1:3.5-5.6 USM for general use, used it on my 350 and it has served me well on the 5D
I would like to upgrade to a new zoom for portraits and general use.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Jim,

I'd go for a fast lens for portraiture so that you have plenty of options to isolate the subject. Zoomwise this would imply the 24-70L or 70-200/2.8L.
Why not consider a good prime or three? The 85L is sublime on a 5D although far from cheap but the 85/1.8 is also faster than any zoom. Add a 50mm and a 135mm and you'd be good to go.

I'm not much into portraits (because I'm not very good at it) but the ones I have taken with the 5D leave me amazed at the quality and disappointed at the execution.

Loving my 24-105 IS L too

A basic nifty fifty would also be good for the bag - a cheap addition
