This may be a silly question but,
When I decide to update from win 10 to 11, do I need to, is it advisable to, disconnect external hard drives first, or does it not really matter?

I disconnect all external devices during upgrades. It does mean that, if the drivers are altered, the external devices should force an update when they are plugged back in.

Funny enough I have just done the upgrade tonight, took about 30 minutes or so. All seems fine upto now although I only use the PC for games, all my work and productivity is done on the Mac Studio.

Microsoft recommend disconnecting all but the system drive ... and that includes any additional internal drives. It's not really essential but their message is clearly "don't complain to us if something gets corrupted during the process" :)

Better to be safe than sorry (y)

You might but I wouldn't see the logic of removing any secondary internal drives for example! This would be right insanity and it is.
You're right. The two secondary internal drives I have, don't have anything on them, so it would seem a bit pointless.

Apparently (according to MS themselves) they don't/won't guarantee that the new OS will install itself on your system drive. There is a thread about it on elevenforums.

I upgraded both my laptop and desktop PC's this weekend without any bother and NO! I didn't disconnect the non-system drives in my desktop PC either :D:eek: I did however make sure I had fresh clones of all the drives before I started (y)

I've updated a number of PCs and workstations to W11 with no problems at all.
However, since it's so easy to disconnect any external drives, I do.
But I've never disconnected any internal drives for upgrading from Win10 to Win11 - but I HAVE sometimes disconnected internal drives if installing Win10 since I've found that Win10 can sometimes install the boot loader on 1 drive and the main program on another.
