Yes
I have just started working through the list of people taking part in this years 52 week challenge as I'm sure I haven't commented on everybodies.

It seems that a few people have fallen by the wayside already :(

I feel that it would work better if I thinned the list down to active threads only but wanted other people opinions.

I don't want to be seen as mean but the point of the list was to help people keep up with the threads as there were so many of them.

Please vote and help me decide which way to go with the thread.

I will keep the poll up for a few days.

Andy

You can take my name off :) I wasnt getting any real feedback so stopped doing it. I think two weeks is a little premature so I voted 6.

Thanks for the reply Vicky.

I think the problem is that so many people post in this section that posts soon move from the first page. This is why I wanted to trim the list down and make it more useable. That way people may work through the list rather than just comment on the ones still on the first page.

I won't take your name off just yet incase you want to give it another go. Maybe try and time your uploads to a Monday. Most people comment on weekend after they have posted their own images. The forum goes mad on a Sunday and nothing stays on page 1 for very long.

I agree about 2 weeks being too early for what it's worth.

A difficult one, Andy.

Last year there was one contributor in particular who missed several weeks at a time because of things beyond his control. He contributed some of the best shots in last year's 52 imho, and made useful comments on other people's threads when he could. On any of the above options, except 'No' he would've been removed. I know that doesn't stop you posting, but if it were me and I was already battling against the odds I'd feel a bit miffed. Just my two-penn'th. :)

btw - it's a really useful list - even though I still haven't managed to keep up with everybody. Thanks for doing it.

Jean

I've voted 'No' for the above reasons.

I'd leave it as is unless somebody asks to be removed. There are so may people taking part I have had to limit my comments to a set number of threads as trying to comment on too many results in short weak comments.

I went for a yes - remove after 6 weeks, but perhaps there's another option?

I know it's more work, but maybe contacting folks on non updated posts to see if they're still "playing" might work better? Doesn't help in the case above though. If people 'aint online, then they're not going to reply. You could add a reply to a presumed "dead" post that you were removing saying it would be removed from the list and if they want to continue, please PM you to get them put back on.

You could then divide the OP into "Active 52s", and "Inactive 52s". Rather than just deleting someone from the list, shuffle them down to Inactive and pop them back up into active if you get a PM.

I'm keeping an excel sheet now for folks who have updated within the last 2-3 weeks plus people I know might take a while to update. (There's one 52 on film so I know that will be tough to keep weekly and easy to lag behind). I also keep people I hope will continue because I like their photography. I check back on those periodically.

It is a big list though and does need trimming. I went through them all on Friday (as far as "T" - The23rdman). An awful lot were not updated past week 1-4. It's a big struggle to get round everyone in a week. I don't know how some of you manage it (I'm looking at you Sarah and John!)

There is another option... We could ask the mods-in-green to perhaps assign a 52 Moderator of some sort. Someone who could create a 52_2010 user group (and moderate the group in terms of permissions etc). That would allow the mod to send a blanket email (rather than a PM) out to either individuals, or the group as a whole. People are more likely to respond to emails than a PM if they're busy.

I'm not sure if this is possible either, but a "People doing 52's" post could then be created with edit permissions assigned to that 52_2010 group allowing anyone who was a member to add or take themselves off and save you a job. Would also help when we get halfway and everyone has to create new posts. Could be a nightmare for you to moderate alone.

Just my twopence!

Ian.

I'd say rather than removing them, get people to get in touch with you should they stop doing it. For example, mine is currently at week 13, I've got the shots processed for 15 and 16, but not 14 yet, so I haven't uploaded them (this week has been chaos, coming back to uni etc).

So rather than you having to worry about it, how about bringing to everyone's attention that if they aren't carrying on their 52, get in touch so you can make the list more readable and useable?

Chris

Just my input, for what its worth.
With all the best intentions people start these projects then one thing or another gets in the way and before you know it your behind, or perhaps the feedback isn't what you hoped for and you lose interest. But I have seen by visiting many peoples that they DO play catch up or join late or stop for a few weeks, it happens.

I think its better if people ask to be removed rather than feeling they have been cut from the team (so to speak).

Some of the shots here are great, but more importantly is the valuable feedback that the members share, although it IS really hard to keep track of who you have commented on; but please do take a moment :)

Congrats to all those still on top I know it aint easy.

Thanks for the input folks. Keep it coming. There are some good suggestions there and I'll do some more thinking tonight.

I have managed to comment on the most active ones but certainly not everybodies. I am also trying to leave constructive feedback but don't always manage it. Sometimes it is just a nice shot but I can't explain what I like about it

On some forums there is an option to create your own groups but I can't find it on here.

Andy

I voted for remove after 6 weeks, but it's a difficult decision.

An up to date list would be really useful.
I used to use the list copied into a spreadsheet to keep track (can't you tell that I'm an accountant?), but so many people seem to have dropped out that I was spending a lot of time linking to inactive threads. The last few weeks I've just been working through the pages, clicking on any that have the current week in the title - but I'm probably missing people who are a week or two behind.

On the other hand, I wouldn't like to alienate anyone from the group.
The ethos of the 52 has always been that it's a personal challenge and nobody is imposing rules on you.
It would be a shame to lose that.

You could then divide the OP into "Active 52s", and "Inactive 52s". Rather than just deleting someone from the list, shuffle them down to Inactive and pop them back up into active if you get a PM.

I like that idea. Rather than completely removing people from the list after 6 weeks, move them down onto the second part of the list.
Instead of calling it inactive, name it something like "Where are you?" and invite them to drop into the thread and let us know if they're still carrying on.
I think that may be a more practical solution than PMing them all individually.

You can take my name off :) I wasnt getting any real feedback so stopped doing it.

Why not give it another go Vic? I was really enjoying your thread.
When you started there were something like 150 themed threads so a lot of the unthemed ones went unnoticed. Numbers are a lot more manageable now, so you should get some more attention.

I think it would be a pity to drop anyone. It is their 52 after all.

I guess I really don't go about commenting in a very organised fashion, like some of you seem to. Most days, I choose several threads at random to comment on, usually those that appear near the top of the current page. Not very scientific, I know, but I realised early on that I would not be able to comment on everyone's thread every week.

I do try to vary it as much as possible, but sorry for any of those that I have missed.

Jenny

It's a really tricky one as the reason I entered the 52 was to push myself to take more photos, to expand my subject matter and hopefully get c&c to help me improve.

I always take any spare time I have to leave comments and feedback on other threads but I agree with others as it is very confusing and time consuming remembering who you have commented on and who you haven't and unfortunately I do miss some, and I do feel bad about that. (I'm not a spreadsheet mad accountant like some  so I ust trawl the threads regularly)

I agree with Sarah when she said the 52 is about a personal achievement and imposing rules would lose some of the ethos but if we put it in the hands of the actual thread starter to inform admin that they won't be continuing and then they can be put into a 'stopped' subcategory it would keep it tidy.

It's awkward as whatever you do will require some more 'admin involvement'.

Breaking the threads into active and inactive, (a good idea in my book, after 6 weeks perhaps - although 'up to date' - '6 weeks behind' - 'stopped' might be better category headers), seems sensible.

Alternatively, you could have a new subcategory each week and when the person updates their thread they get moved into the subcategory they have just added. That way you can see exactly where everyone is and choose which week to view. This may help as I don't comment on others until I've posted my effort for the week. However, this would need a LOT of admin involvement, which only you can decide if you have time.

One other option is to have a much better uniform system for people updating their thread titles, perhaps we all agree that when you update your thread you change the title to read, for example, Mad Frankie 52 - Week 15 Stare - Updated 22/04/10 or similar so you can easily glance down the list and see who has posted since the last date you looked in...

I'll have a think and see if I can come up with any other ideas...

I might do a 52 but only just getting over the 365 :geek:

As an aside, I was wondering if it would be a good idea to have a weekly competition where we have one thread per week where a photo is recommended as the 'best of the week'. We all vote and then the one with the most votes wins. No prizes but just kudos and confidence that comes from peer enjoyment!

Well you can def remove me as I shamefully didn't get past posting that I was going to do one ....I'll update my original

Thanks for the input guys.

I didn't even get chance to log in last night (why does work get in the way of forums  )

I think the best plan is to have an inactive section as a few of you have suggested. With a note to pm me if you want it moving.

It will be a work of progress over the mext few days.

Cheers,

Andy

Not sure this is such a good idea - reasons being, if its late it doesnt get chosen yet could easily be the best shot, but more importantly - that turns it into a competition and this is a personal challenge really.
(apart from the obvious admin task that would be for someone, to trawl all 52s and then decide a select few)
just my thoughts :suspect:

I've voted for 6 weeks but think maybe to leave it alone, its a tricky one as later this year i have a big knee operation planned and i may well miss several weeks although that doesn't mean im giving up. To be honest i never look at the list, im on the forum often enough and i look at the latest postings that way.
