Hiya.. New to this forum so be nice :)

I am looking to up grade my Nikon D40x. Bin looking around on the net and that.

I come around some nice cameras... Bin looking on ebay at some cameras.. Nikon D90
Nikon D200
Nkon D2X

All round £500-£650.. I know that the Nikon D2X is a older model Nikon D200 And Nikon D90 Are around the same age..

Just wondering what one would be the best to buy? I take photos of most things.. Sport, Landscapes, people, widlife ...

kR! :)

I'd go for D2X *in good condition*. You can't go wrong with a pro camera.
Between D200 and D90, both have relatively similar AF, but D90 is lighter, and newer with far better sensor.
If you can stretch to D300 it is in a different league with its pro grade AF.

D200 is older than the D90.

The D80 is around same age as D200.

Go with the D200 or if you can push it, the D300 - the build quality of these cameras very good, but they are heavier, so keep that in mind.

If I wanted latest technology for my money, and to keep weight down, then the D90
If I wanted build quality, but not to spend too much, then D200.
if I wanted build quality and better AI - (better image processing engine, so faster AF better ISO handling, etc) - and was prepeared to spend a little more then D300
With the more modern models you get features like self cleaning sensors, which are good to have if you arent to happy with cleaning your CCD yourself..

Also remember if you go with a cheaper model then you may have some budget left over to go towards some better quality glass, or another lens with a different focal lngth to what you have already, like a tele or a wide angle....

The problem is, there are so many choices.....

DARRENB.. Thanks for that :)

Your sure right thy are so many choicess!
Under stand what your staying with the D300 but dnt think i could push to that :(

Think i am going to go for D2X if not then a D200 with grip. Any one got any info on the Nikon D2X i know its geting on now.

kR! :)

My 2 housemates have D90's and they rate them very highly, especially for high ISO performance. One upgraded from a D40x and the other from a Nikon superzoom. I have no real experience with them (and being a Canon user, I am not really used to the Nikon user interface/controls) but from what I have heard, they are excellent cameras and get very good reviews.

Here is a comparison of specifications: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/com...meras=nikon_d2x,nikon_d90,nikon_d200&show=all

As a starting point have a look at this re the D200 and D2x:
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d200.htm
Ken Rockwell is not the be all and end all authority but it's a starting point, notice what he thinks about the D200 being able to do 90% of what the D2x can do, but at less weight and less cost.....

Kentiish91, I've just moved from a gripped D200 to a D2X. The D200 was a great camera - still is a great camera I think - but I needed pro-spec weather sealing and handling and although the D200 did the job, the D2X just gives me more reassurance.

* In terms of image quality there's little between these two models; the D2X produces slightly larger images so can be blown up that little bit extra.

* The D2X errs on the side of green a little more but that's a white balance thing (the D200 was a bit more on the blue side IMO). It's not a problem though, especially if you're images are always going to be processed through software.

* The D2X has a faster FPS - 7ps rather than 5fps

*The D200 has a built-in flash for use as a commander; the D2X doesn't have a built-in flash.

* The D200 uses EN-EL3 batteries, which are about £40 new and give about 450 shots per charge. The D2X uses EN-EL4 batteries which cost £85 but give 800-900 shots per charge.

* Both have a great menu system that's easy to use and full of customisable sections.

* Both have excellent top panel and rear panel layouts (miles better than the Canon's I'v used)

* Overall build quality from both cameras is the best you'll get.

* The D2X is probably the better to use for a long period of time; feels lighter in the hand than a gripped D200 and the rear controls are just a tad easier to reach one-handed.

Have a look on my flickr site to see the shots I've done on a D00 and a D2X and see what you think - camera details are in the image exif panel on the bottom right :)

Both cameras are great buys for under £700. Like Darrenb says, the D200 will do 90% of what the D2X will do, but that 10% can make all the diference....Personally, if you go with a D2X you'll literaly only want to swap for a D3 variant, it's that good a camera.

I went from D200 to D2x to D300 to D3.

The D200 is a fine camera, but not too good at high iso.

The D2x is a great camera under iso800.

Not owned a D90 but generally it's known as good for higher ISO, so it depends on what you're going to shoot. For sport and Wildlife you may want the higher ISO.

However, if it was me I would look at the D90 if you need high iso, or the D2x if you don't

Oh yes, that's exactly the position I'm in now :) Oooh, I sooooo want a used D3 for two grand.....

Thank you so much for the replys.

Realy helpful :) . It is defo out of the D200 & D2X.

The ISO on the D200 is 100 - 1600 in 1, 1/2 or 1/3 EV steps (up to 3200 as boost)
&
D2X ISO is 100 - 800 in 1, 1/2 or 1/3 EV steps (1600 & 3200 as boost)

For sports and wildlife could i not just set the D2X to 1600?

kR! :)

The D2x also has a high speed crop mode that makes it similar to the D2h if im not mistaken?
