Odd-shaped growths on the foliage, flowers, acorns and stems of oak trees are often caused by gall wasps.

Flipping heck, There are lots of round gall on several trees nearby, I had never seen one that shape so dismissed the gall wasp.

LOTS of different wasps cause all sorts of weird fruits on trees.

As an aside, the more normal "Oak Apple" galls are used for making permanent ink.
