Is anyone on the forum an underwater photographer, I use a canon g10 and canon housing rated to 40 m , I will post some photos when I get used to the forum, any photos of your work would be appreciated, regards Paul

Hi Paul, welcome.

There's a few underwater photographers around, but not a lot of work gets posted. I'll be taking my first sets for a couple of years in May as I've not dived for a while due to injury, so i'll stick a few up then. There's a couple on my flickr page but only from snorkelling. I tend to browse wetpixel.com for U/W stuff, but the odd bit does appear here

Mike

Keep them coming guys! :) I love looking at underwater shots probably *** I'm scared to go deep!! White tip is lovely ;) as well as the moray :)

Photoshelter had a good post on underwater photography on their blog a few weeks ago, might be worth a look.

This is one type of photography that I very much want to learn. Can anyone post some tips or tutorials please?

some quick tips.

Things look bigger underwater. This effects your minimum focusing distances as well and you may want to consider a dioptre port on your housing to correct.

As with all things photographic light is everything. But remember underwater you lose roughly the equivalent of 1 stop of light (through a blue filter though) for every 2m you travel in any direction.

For this reason you need to

Get close to your subject.
Wide angles work better then telephotos
Take lights with you, but get this lights as far away from the lens as possible. Even in the clearest water you'll get backscatter if you don't.

Maintain your housings, things will flood if you don't
Learn to dive well first. Your buoyancy control needs to be spot on, and your dive gets taken over

First and most important point....

Once you learn don't thing you can take your camera straight away....it takes time and having good control is a must....

I have an underwater camera but I am really just learning. It takes a lot longer as you can't just go out and take a few underwater photos properly.
You loose red very quickly so an external strobe or two are almost essential. Intova make a good budget model.
I will have to upload some of my photos onto Flickr.

I've just bought a second hand Canon G10, underwater housing + flash from these very forums! I'll be using it in sharm el sheikh next month and shall post up my results on my return!

Just curious, where can I get my paws on underwater housing? Underwater photography is something I'd love to experiment with more, especially underwater portraits!

You would be best off getting an underwater camera and housing package I thing. The housings for slr cameras are very expensive.

You could try http://www.camerasunderwater.co.uk/index.php. If its for the 5Dii in your profile be ready to have VERY deep pockets! Underwater photography isn't cheap I've found!

what he said. Paul at cameras underwater is very good. Its worth going in for a chat. They're just underneath Charing Cross.

Assuming from your post you're not going very deep (for portraits) it may be worth looking at a EWA-Bag rather then a housing. A housing for your 5d ii will cost more then the camera. Jonathan Ryan has done some great underwater portrait work. Worth PMing him or looking on youtube for his tutorials. Lights and safety are a really big consideration with portraits

As mentioned cameras underwater and very good and reliable.

Alternatively I can relist mine in the for sale thread. I'm in no hurry as I use it for snorkeling....

I just bought a Peli case with a camera, waterproof enclosure and two underwater flashguns. All rated to 200 feet. Its a couple of years old but unused. Was £ 999 new. Paid a lot less. Am going to hire it out.

Fantastic pictures gblades! I only hope that i can acheive half the quality of those!

@gblades That shot of the turtle underwater is gorgeous!

@GHP I love that last one of the turtle, gorgeous photograph & amazing light.

Thanks AshlyRose. I had to get in front of him and wait for him to come to me.
Because I was so close, I didn't use flash, in case it startled him, so a quick manual white balance and used available light. I was using a 12-24 lens for this shot. It wasn't deep, around 5 mtrs I think, so there was a good bit of sunlight at that shallow depth.

..& apparently wonderful conditions! I'm an admirer of natural light hahaha. It's a shot to be proud of, especially underwater & shooting in manual.

I wish I had the opportunity to shoot underwater shots such as those posted in hereee!

I've just bought a waterproof compact for my first foray into underwater photography... not sure I would even consider taking my DSLR in the water... just feels wrong! lol

Some absolute cracking shots in here though!

Purchase 'the underwater photographer' by Martin edge, worth it's weight in gold!

HI Guys. I've just found this thread as I'm new to this forum. I am though a pro underwater photographer . When I work out how to post on here I'll put a few images up from time to time.

I'm happy to answer questions as well. I've been an underwater photographer since 1996, so I've taken a few images on film and digital.

Ooh I'll be intetested to see what you have to share with us all :} underwater photography is beautiful & something I'd love to experiment with properly one day.

Hi All, sorry for the delay in replying. The start to the Olympics kept me busy above water for the last couple of weeks.

I did manage a dip into Stoney and visited the new 'old' wreck which is great as an unusual subject. It was a bit cloudy in the water so I wasn't over the moon with the results, but the place shows potential.

Also if you read Diver magazine you can see my article from a trip to South Africa I did earlier this year. I enjoyed it so much I've decided to run an underwater photography trip there.

Longinanus: I'd researching which housing to go for at the moment for the D800, but the Sea&Sea or Hugyfot are looking good for me.

Gavin

I am surprised you have not considered Nauticam, right on your doorstep as well!

I haven't discounted anything as yet, but I like to stick with what I know. I've used S&S for many years while on film and Hugyfot as well. Plus the benefit of Hugy is the Hugycheck system which should ensure leaks are non existent. It's no good me being on assignment in the back of beyond and suffering a flood.
