Need some advice on a compact camera suitable for diving down to 10 metres or so, with option for external card...... or if the price is excessive would it be a better option to get a waterproof casing for my EOS400D, if so are there any other bits and bobs I would need?

Your cheapest option would be to get a compact with a underwater housing, bought mine from asda a few years ago, not brilliant pics but they are ok as memories for me, underwater housings for dslr`s are expensive.
 
Are you an experienced diver? If not, don't even think of getting a waterproof DSLR housing. It's too much hassle. With a compact camera, you can enjoy the dive and take photos if you feel like it. But with a DSLR, the dive is all about the camera.
 
I bought for my son 2 years ago a rugged panasonic compact that is waterproof.

He took it diving and produced some good pictures and video underwater.

He loves it as the build quality is good, pictures are excellent and he can drop it in his beer as a party trick.

Exactly why I never bothered with UW togging. I just loved diving too much :lol:
 
Should have added I'm not an experienced diver, so the DSLR is out of the window. Just want something to take a few snaps of me and the kids whilst Scuba/snorkelling on holidays. Seems to be a few cameras about advertised as waterproof to 10m in the £50 - £100 bracket, but the reviews tend to tell a different story :(
Robinb Is the Panasonic you speak of the DMC-FT2, just a bit steep at £200 + when I have the EOS for all my other photographic needs as apart from the diving once a year it'll probably never be used. Has anyone got any other recommendations?

I use a intova IC12 compact camera can be bought new for £145 with the housing, bought it off ebay. You can get cheaper ones if you donot want video. If you want to pm me and ill send you some pics I took in Egypt last year with mine.

It does a good job and I get some very good pics when diving, and like said all my concentration is not on the camera but on the dive.

For just occasional use try a ewa marine bag but they are still not cheap. Sadly there isn't a cheap option for this
 
Yep sadly UW photography isn't cheap.. I've rented them in the past when doing liveabords, but even then you're still talking £50. Most of the cheap ones (cameras and housing solutions) are designed for snorkelling only - 3m or so; not going to be much use on the majority of dives
 
My camera goes to 40m, I have dived to 32m with it and it was fine
I agree you can pay mega bucks for one but to me I donot see the point in this, if it floods you loose massive amounts of money where as if mine floods I can just buy another and not think of all the money I have lost.

Spikek6 ~ found the Intova CP9 Waterproof 9MP Digital Camera and Housing whilst browsing for the IC12. It's selling for £126.53 (inc p&p) from a UK based firm, Mikes. It has several reviews on another website (Simply scuba) with an average 9 out of 10 and not one mention of the dreaded "leak" whilst being waterproof to the same 40 metres, which will be more than enough to cover my needs. Photo qualtiy and operation seems pretty good as well considering the price. This may be the one :)
