Hello All,

I've just booked my holiday to Riviera Maya, Mexico and last time I went the snorkelling was fantastic right off the beach, BUT I had no camera to take pictures under water with.

I would like to spend about £100 (but will increase if you think there is a real need to), and would like your advice on what to get...

Any example pics would be really appreciated.

Thanks,

Dsn

I use a Canon IXUS100 in a Ikelite housing underwater and for the money it takes some great pictures, and even better video clips - http://youtu.be/rjGZGcGH0vQ

I've seen them sell 2nd hand for between 200-250 so a bit more than your budget though.

I'm off to cancun, mexico end of feb and I'm taking my GoPro HD for underwater shots while snorkelling, cost my £165 from amazon but you may get them cheaper second hand on eBay.

£100 might be okay for getting you second hand camera and housing, most likely Fujifilm or Sony as they seem to be the ones that come up most often. I would recommend servicing/checking the housing before hand, gettinga spare o-ring for a couple of quid and get a pot of silicone grease. Another positive is if the camera floods your less bothered about it than say you would be for a Canon 5D :P

Have a scout around eBay and also this forum is good for dive equipment threads if you want to take a look:- http://www.yorkshire-divers.com/forums/personal-adverts/

I purchased a couple of disposable underwater film cameras for my trip to Cape Verde & surprisingly got some impressive photographs for what it is :}

I use Panasonic FT2 and it's a decent camera I bought specifically for places I wouldn't want to take my DSLR to. Rated to 10m I think so it's more than most others in the same class. Good for snorkelling but not strong enough for diving unfortunately. With the "underwater setting" it gets pretty good white balance.

Another alternative is to buy one of these or similar and use your existing camera.

Thanks for the responses.

Hmmm, this is a difficult choice now. Some of the things you see in the water are amazing and my girlfriend can't swim (she's 29 and having lessons before you get worried). I was so disappointed with the disposable I got when I was last in Mexico, but didn't realise how much it would be to get a decent underwater cam. It's a trade off between this and a new R11 Driver.... :thinking:

I've seen an OPTEKA housing on Amazon, has anyone had any experience of it? It doesn't exactly look portable mind...

I think, if you were going down the bag option you'd be better of spending a little more and getting a EWA marine bag.

Before I went to the Maldives last year I bought a Canon D10 for snorkelling. It's rated to 10m underwater and I was very happy with it.
