im currently a student who will be trying to get work this year doing weddings etc- im currently deciding on a new lens to go with my 5dmkii whihc will be the 24-70 f2.8l or the 24-105 f4l is there much between them besides the few stops. im so undecided..

any help much apreciated

Im taking an uneducated guess that its going to be down to your personal preference between Longer focal range or wider aperture - I'd personally go for the 24-70 F2.8 and get a 70-200 F2.8 to go with it further down the line.

I had the same choice to make. Reviews state the 24-70 is a bit sharper than the 24-105 and of course you have the extra stop of light.

I decided on the 24-70 as I felt it would allow a bit more flexibility regarding low light and couldnt ignore the numerous reviews about the quality.

Ask yourself what you want out of the lens. Do you need the extra reach? Would you prefer the extra stop? Would you use the IS?

24-105 works in 99% situations - Where I need the f2.8, I have a tamron 28-75 as a backup (if you are looking at weddings you should have backup gear)

The IS does help in many situations.

I cannot see that the 24-105 is sharper in real life situations. I've used both and other than the one stop advantage the 24-105 is equal in sharpness, longer focal length and has IS. that makes it and the 70-200 f2.8IS my two most used lenses at weddings and in the studio.

I'd go with the 24-70 f/2.8. I've got the 24-105 f/4 and while it's a superb lens in every way - after I played with my mates 70 I decided I needed to switch.

Now I just need to get rid of the 105 somehow... :)

Bear in mind, the 70 is a lot heavier then the 105 and its bigger, and of course it got slightly less focal range. The 105 is a great walk around every day lens though which produces superb images.

If you plan on shooting video the 105 might have the upper hand as the IS is actually pretty good at reducing camera shake if filming handheld. Just bear in mind that if you use the built in microphone that will pick up the IS noise.

Music hides that well :)

Same here - I use the 24-70 for events and the 24-105 as my travel lens on a 5d Mk2. With a CP on the end, I'm hard pressed to tell the difference between either with outdoor shots from 4.0 upwards to be honest. Indoors there's a slight difference where lighting is limited. Obviously IS counters the lack of aperture for 'posed' shots, but IS can never make up for 2.8 vs motion.

Horses for courses - if someone held a gun to my head, I'd probably relinquish the 24-70, but then I do more outdoor work.

As you are getting it for weddings then I would advise getting the 24-70 f/2.8 as the extra stop could be invaluable in low light situations (like in a church with no flash allowed)
