Been trying to update camera raw from my elements 10 for the past four hours but nothing seems to want to progress further than a downloading from adobe website pop up at the bottom of my screen, also tried updating via the help/updates tab in elements itself but that is completely non responsive!!

I'm quite comfortable with elements 10 so would prefer just to update camera raw so I can work on raw files from my Nikon d600 while I fathom out wether to eventually upgrade to elements 11 or lightroom 5.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Matt

It's not going to help updating to 6.7, support for the nikon 600d didn't come in untill 7.2 rc if memory serves me right, that versions not compatable with elements 10.
Best bet is to get the latest free DNG converter, convert your raw to dng (keeping the raw safe as well) and open the dng in elements 10.

Sorry Norfolkbloke if I am jumping in on your thread but I had the same problems & have downloaded the DNG converter BUT .......... Wayne can you help further on this aspect of image types?

Does the DNG file (which is big) also retain all the goodness/detail that the RAW file contained in other words more than the jpg does?

Love this phrase, -

retain all the goodness

I'll leave an answer to Wayne, he's more of an expert than me.

But, I don't think you lose any vitamins....

Hi, There's no loss of quality by using converting to DNG files, in fact the files are generally about 20% smaller which saves on disk space.

Another advantage is the XMP file which holds the metadata and any editing info is embedded into the DNG file itself. With a RAW file it's on a separate sidecar file, so if you need to give someone your Raw file and they need the metadata and any editing changes you've made you'd have to give them two files. Hope this helps.

Thanks George - my problem with my baby Nikon P7700 (only a point & shoot but supposedly advanced ) is that the RAW files can't be opened by my Photoshop software (PE10 & CS4) unless I upgrade but thankfully can be opened by my LR4. So I guess I can convert to DNG files & open in ALL my software without losing out on the advantages of RAW.

However I do suspect that RAW files vary from camera to camera & in all honestly, when I have worked with RAW, I don't feel able to pull a lot more from the shots unless it is me being stooopid :D

You don't really loose anything with most cameras, with one or two some of the makers own lens correction info is lost (PS can't read it) but it doesn't affect the way photoshop/lr reads the file. Thats why it's always worth keeping the original raws as well, that and who knows what advances will come in the future.

Ok

Thought id try downloading a trial version of elements 11 instead, that doesn't want to work neither does a trial version of lightroom 5!!

Bring on the knitting.....:bonk:

Matt

I wish I could help you as I know how frustrating I was firstly when I bought a Fuji X10 with no RAW support then my Nikon P7700.

I'll get you a spare pair of knitting needles then

Or try Adobe Support... they have a "chat"-function for live support.

But by the sound of it, you may have some system issues? The installation really should be straight forward...

What problem(s) do you have?

knitting? What plastic or metal kneedles, all those different wool types, knit one pearl one, oops dropped a stitch... b****r that for a game of darts, give me photoshop any day :D

Hi

On attempting to proceed to downlowd from the adobe website I get a pop up saying ''sorry, an error accurred. the user mis configured.... (actually I can't remember what the rest of it said!!)

My laptop, despite being highspec when new is beginning to show it's age a little. I'm sure these things would be easier and less hassle with a mac!!

Knitting needles are cheaper!!

Matt

My laptop is a few months old on Windows 8 & I am,getting this but I will have to sort out another day as I use LR4 now for 95% of my PP.
