Hi guys I hope you can be of some help, id even accept and admit to being a fool if it turns out to being something simple if it means It will work!

Ive tried getting pictures off my 500d but my computer wont display them in their RAW format. CS3 Extended comes up with the following error message : Unable to use the camera raw plug-in it is not compatible with this version of photoshop."

Its worth noting id done a search initially for this problem and noticed its a common issue, all you need to do or so I thought was pop along to adobe online and download a newer plug in for your camera type.

So thats the stage im at now, got my new plug in but it still wont work?

Tech guru's please help :|

Here is the download I used, its the one I could find listed for me camera.

After more reading It seems I may have to upgrade to cs4 as adobe didnt make anymore RAW updates for CS3 and the 500d?!

Is there anyway around this? :(

Although Adobe publish updates to it's Raw converter, it only does them for the current product. So the raw update you downloaded was for CS4 not CS3 and it doesn't work as you found out.

However there is a workaround. CS3 will handle DNG files. These are adobe propriety raw files. You can convert your 500D CR2 raw files to dng by using the FREE dng converter from Adobe.

Simply run the converter, and then use CS3 to open your files.

Excellent! I used your route Chappers, thanks a bunch. I had to change the preferences to work with my standard plug in on cs3.

I can see this being a bit of a nuisance, having to do that to every single raw is going to be a pain. Maybe its time for cs4....

Certainly upgrading from CS3 to CS4 is cheaper than buying CS4 outright!
Would probably be worth it to you in the long run then that way you can install adobe camera raw plug-in 5.

Then again you could always use Zoombrowser/Imagebrowser to view your images and DPP to convert them, both came free with your camera.

well that didnt last long! It was annoying me having to convert RAW files first, so making the plunge and upgrading to CS4
